I grabbed a catfish by the belly and got stung. My hand swelled up to the size of a softball and it was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I had to leave camp early because of it.

more likely to "fin" you than the larger ones. The trick is to not allow your fingers to be behind the pectoral or dorsal fins.
Hold the fish head first with your thumb , index and middle fingers. (thumb on their stomach side) If the pectoral fins are tucked in, you and safely pick them up by holding the fins close to their sides.

Back to the snake. The fish in the photo appears to be too large for the snake to swallow. Their technique is to hold the fish out of water until it suffocates. Then that change ends , swallowing the head first.
