We haven't even gotten thru the Columbus Day controversy (which I agree with) and now we are in the Halloween controversy. Why is anybody looking for the Merry Christmas controversy so early?
I am tempted to ditch Facebook entirely (I've blocked several people). But otherwise I wouldn't see pics of my grandkids...but I have rid myself with more than a few "offenders."

Was in Hallmark store today for birthday card, and 1/3 of the store is for Christmas! When I noted this, an employee said it's related to weather, when it starts to change, so do the displays.
Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas!!!
HECK with Halloween, which is the beginning of the END!!!

(63,221 posts)I don't go on social media, but here in Boston people don't really seem to have a problem w/ "Happy Holidays" and in NYC you ALWAYS said "Happy Holidays" unless you knew for sure what specific holiday someone celebrated.

(63,221 posts)Why do they make an issue of it every single year? People are going to do what they do. All their whining isn't going to change anything and it just creates a lot of ugliness around the season. I guess some people aren't happy unless they are outraged about something.

(8,381 posts)Being in a rural area, there's no opportunity for the kids to go door to door, so we dress up, open our trunks filled with candy, and have the kids come to us.
One person I know was going "on and on" about the "war on Christmas" and I said, "Talk to me when December 25th isn't a national holiday."
And a comment upthread is true, coming from NY, we *always* said "Happy Holidays" if we didn't know what a person celebrates. If we did, we'd wish a "Happy Hanukkah" or "Merry Christmas" and for some, it was just "Happy New Year."

(15,696 posts)... is the fact that these faux Christians have no idea that "holiday" means "holy day."

(33,688 posts)The early xtians co-opted the ancient mid-winter Roman festival Saturnalia for their own purposes.
Xmas is just a Roman festival of eating, drinking and gluttony to celebrate the return of the celestial orb, with a different name.

(7,911 posts)And for the record, as an atheist, I say "Merry Christmas" to people all through the season. I make it an enjoyable secular holiday for myself, my family members, and my friends. As far as I'm concerned, Easter is about the bunnies and eggs, and Christmas is about Santa, family, and warming up an otherwise cold and dreary winter season.

(63,221 posts)I always thought it encompassed Christmas Eve, Christmas AND New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, so even if you are a Christian, you shouldn't be offended because people are really wishing you a happy holiday season.
ProfessorGAC
(65,085 posts). . .that New Year's Day is a Holy Day in catholicism. So, technically one should be wishing that as a happy day too, and nobody should take offense.

(5,364 posts)She's a wonderful woman but it seems she forms so many of her views on FB. The "wall" she shows me is but a massive cavalcade of mostly RW crap. Almost like a clearing house of RW email forward type messages, corny as all get-out inspiration bits of wisdom, Flag-waving USA! USA! USA! memes, and the usual boycott exhortations for firms that don't say merry x-mass instead of happy holidays. Snopes would have a field day with this shit.
I say all this because she's not conservative, or even political at all. It all comes from the FB crap; and so I hear a steady stream of vulgar patriotism, military and law-enforcement worship, and curiously, a dislike of anything French. I told her the French were instrumental in helping the fledgling US win the revolutionary war: She said "Bite me".
FB just seems like 'Reader's Digest' overlayed on AOL internet.

I usually reply, "And, a Happy Festivus for the rest of us." I don't get why it is so difficult for some people to understand that not everyone is a Christian, and therefore, not everyone celebrates THEIR religious holidays.

(2,188 posts)I've heard a few say it 5 or 6 weeks before Christmas, but late September or October? Never.
Just wait a few years. Remember, these people are complaining now, they aren't waiting until late November or December to start in about it.
