Morning Joe was pretty much open mouthed when that clip played of Carson calmly talking about how he used to go after people with bats and rocks and then tried to knife someone. Even Joe was flabbergasted.
Can this lineup of republicans look any uglier? Sure, maybe he didn't get a chance to talk about how the Lord saved him, but doncha wonder if the Lord could lose him again just because the Lord can't waste time with the likes of Carson. Maybe on Inauguration Day, then what?
Even trump at his craziest doesn't come across THIS crazy...

(13,426 posts)Those of us on the left need to realize we are dealing with people for whom rational thought is impossible. We cannot appeal to their senses of reason or decency as they have neither. We might be outraged by behavior such as Carson's but the RWNJs see the world completely different than we do. This story may mean nothing to them and we should be prepared for that.

(40,416 posts)I have experience with these people, however I will admit that it is anecdotal.
Here I go.
First, I have never known a Seventh Day Adventist who I did not like personally. They are, in my experience, truly nice and gentle folks.
Second, they are kooky beyond credibility. They have some rather radical beliefs about most things, nonetheless worshipping god on Sunday probably being the least of it.
They reject a lot of science, including biology, physics, etc. As a whole, they tend to creationism, the young Earth kind. If that weren't bad enough there's the Saturday sabbath thing which really sticks in their craw. Here is where the lunacy of their beliefs sticks out. Oh! And I should mention that they tend to be End Timers as well.
But I did start out by saying that in my experience I have liked every Seventh Day Adventist I have met. Indeed, that is true, until recently.
Ben Carson is an ignorant and dangerous buffoon who would use his political power to foist his beliefs on the country. Of all the nice folks who are Seventh Day Adventists, he is the first I could label with "utter lying asshole".
I should remind folks here that I am a lifelong atheist but normally I do not criticize religious people in spite that I think religion is generally a bad thing. However, when a person uses religion to promote rubbish, I draw the line.
Carson is one of the many GOP clown car occupants who do this. In fact I do not see one of the GOP candidates who do not put religion first. The exceptions are scary, Lindsey Graham, and possibly Trump (although Trump has not spoken on religion much at all, and there is plenty of worries beyond religion about Trump's candidacy.)
R&K for this one.

(42,770 posts)"GOP" any more. It's completely fragmented. In the past, all single focused = stop anything Obama wants.
1. Now, Boehner gave up.
2. Kochs probably in turmoil. who were they supporting?
3. Trump effectively blew up Jeb's chances.
4. Tea Party freaks shaking their end up.
5. BushCo probably floundering.
6. Trump telling people GOP all about money
7. Trump telling people it's OK to denounce Iraq war shenanigans.
8. Wonder who Rush is supporting?
It's like someone blew the party up with dynamite !
Perhaps the piper is being paid ? The result of not having anything to be for??

(7,394 posts)"I had real anger issues. I would just fly off the handle and really become quite irrational and try to hurt people with baseball bats, hammers, whatever. In this particular case, I happened to have a large camping knife. And, you know, one of my friends angered me. And I just lunged at his abdomen with the knife. Probably would have seriously injured or killed him, but he happened to have on a large metal belt buckle under his clothing, upon which the blade broke.
And, of course, he fled in terror. But I was more horrified than he was, because I realized that I was trying to kill somebody over nothing and that I would never realize my dreams of becoming a physician. And I would end up in jail, reform school, or the grave. And I just locked myself in the bathroom and started praying "

(13,390 posts)I bet it will come across as recovery from blackness.
It's confirmation of the correctness of their bigoted views. Carson seems to be happy to continue to capitalize on the narrative that begins with the exceptional Black doctor who defied circumstances and overcame Blackness.
His greatest gift to white republicans is being a best friend who is Black. If he were to get elected I think he would set back race relations centuries.

Now he says he stabbed a guy, or almost did? I bet this never happened.

(14,532 posts)I have been wondering if this really happened. With all the press this is getting the guy who he allegedly tried to stab has not come forward. No one that he claims he threw rocks and bricks at have come forward.

(63,912 posts)I hallucinated once after a long stint in the recovery room after surgery. I was sleep deprived, the doc told me. I reinterpreted things that were going on. It wasn't scary but it was the strangest thing I ever experienced.
Perhaps he is hallucinating after too much sleep deprivation as a surgeon. Maybe his brain has deteriorated after all those long hours in the OR...

This man and his supporters are scary because of their desire to create a theocracy.
The really scary one is Ted Cruz, who many are saying will be the one to rise if Trump and Carson fall.

"Dr. Carson... would you say the world is around 4 Billion years old, or around 10,000 years old?'
Carson: "Around 10,000."
BZZZZZTTT "Next contestant! Thanks for playing, and goodbye."
It's a test - a really simple test - of whether science and reason hold a place in Carson's world view. Anybody... brain surgeon or not.. who thinks the world is 10,000 years old is incapable of leading this country in the 21st Century.
There's lots more.... Carson says that the power of God has directed him to run. He thinks - contrary to science - that homosexuality is a choice. He thinks Islam was founded by Esau rather than Mohammed. He didn't know the Sunni and Shia were deadly enemies and thought they could form an alliance.
Carson is/was a brilliant neurosurgeon. An expertise in one area doesn't make him qualified to be president.
