No matter how hard I try, I just do not get Ben Carson's rise within the Republican party. I get why conservatives support Donald Trump or Ted Cruz or even Jeb Bush but not Carson. It's not because he's a conservative who I disagree with on just about every issue it's because he's an idiot.
But he's a well-respected neurosurgeon, he can't be an idiot!
Yes, he can be; there are different levels of intelligence. Clearly he's book smart, but it's entirely possible to be brilliant in one area of life and completely clueless in just about every other. That's exactly the type of person I believe Carson is.
Even his "brilliance" as a medical scientist has to be questioned considering his belief that the Earth was created in six days; that the theory of evolution is being pushed by the devil; the Big Bang theory is a "fairy tale"; and he even perpetuated several myths about vaccines during the second GOP debate.
You really have to be willfully ignorant (or flat-out crazy) to know that much about the human brain, yet believe the Earth is 6,000 years old and that evolution is a myth.

This is something to really think about. He might become the GOP's candidate.
I think Trump is also a bit crazy also.

(9,893 posts)has experienced a head trauma or has a growing brain tumor. I read a book about his experiences as a neurosurgeon written by him way back when he was "just" a neurosurgeon and he sounded completely normal. Nothing like the off-the-rails crackpot he seems today. I can't even believe it's the same guy.

(26,268 posts)He didn't go into consulting or teaching, since if he just had a physical change that hampered his ability to do surgery, he could still share his gift. And it would have been pretty lucrative.
I remember when my mother started showing what we now know were signs of dementia, one of the things she did was say completely off the wall and beyond irrational things. The way he always looks so sleepy makes me suspicious he's on some mighty heavy medication.

He has absolutely no experience in foreign policy. He doesn't want no Mooslim to be President. And lots more. What's not to like.

(337 posts)I get that people agree and disagree on abortion. But it strikes me as odd that a brilliant NEUROSURGEON would have such a black and white, obtuse position on abortion. Even if he doesn't like it due to religious beliefs, he thinks it's practical to not allow abortions regardless of circumstance? No nuance whatsoever?
A neurosurgeon would rather abortion be moved to the black market instead of a safe sanitary hospital. I am impressed he can say that with a straight face!
That immediately struck me as dishonest and pandering.

(108,980 posts)Because of his appealingly sunny personality. His supporters aren't listening to WHAT he's saying, or responding to his logic. They like his soft-spoken bedside demeanor. He's doctor-knows-best to them. A genius brain surgeon who must be a genius at everything else, too. Plus, he has a self-deprecating humor that the media will eat up. And the media will also love his complete outsider status.
Don't bother telling me why his supporters are wrong. I know they're idiots.
But he's going to be the one running against whoever we put up. If it's Bernie, with little support among the African American personality, and a bombastic personality, I think we're in trouble.
Either Martin or Hillary would have a better chance.

(13,426 posts)I honestly do not understand his appeal. Then again, I never understood the appeal of Sarah Palin.
Who are Carson's biggest supporters? The evangelicals and social conservatives?
He could probably give the Dem nominee 400+ EVs and majority control of the House despite all of the gerrymandering so Carson winning the nomination would be good for us.

(24,461 posts)I think ALL of those religion-poisoned, woman-hatin', worker hatin' whackjobs aren't fit to be president.
They took the Bewsh Agenda and injected a meth/steroid mix for good measure. This is like a bad experiment gone horribly awry.

(13,108 posts)He spends a fair amount of time talking with his eyes closed.
He is soft spoken, but not in a comforting way.
His opinions and accusations are dangerous and outlandish.
He has extreme difficultly explaining the policies he wants implemented.
There is not a decent person running on the Republican ticket.
They represent the party of insanity.
Failed policy after failed policy.
Decade after decade.
Facts, data, charts, grafts, surveys mean nothing to the party of insanity.
They ignore economic facts and scientific facts.
Why the Democratic party allowed these insane individuals to take
control of this country is beyond me.
They not only allowed it, they often aided and abetted them in their quest.
There can be no bipartisanship when one party is incapable of rational thought.
It is truly sickening watching what both parties have done to this country.

They really like Trump, but they love Carson. They're nuts over him. Lots of "Carson 2016" on shiny big SUVs.
Funny thing is, they don't come off as dominionists or evangelicals but they like his religious slant. I don't get it.
I'll guess that he, to them, is more electable than Trump. Even they admit that though they like Trump's views, they think his bombast is impolitic at times.

(25,966 posts)I don't think you can over-emphasize this point. From a political ideology and/or policy perspective, they're all selling pretty much the same big bag -o- crazy. The difference between a guy like Trump and a guy like Carson is mostly how polite and soft-spoken they sound while saying the same batshit-insane things.

(46,436 posts)Sadly, my husband and I have a couple of relatives who think he's amazing and push Carson memes on my FB page daily. Like you, I can understand the appeal of Trump and some of the others, even though I completely disagree, but Carson is beyond comprehension.
