A little baby orangutan who was dumped outside in the sun in a cardboard box is now getting the help he desperately needed thanks to the efforts of rescuers from the UK-based International Animal Rescue (IAR) who saved him from certain death.
The baby, who has been named Gito, had been kept as a pet in a village in Western Borneo. According to IAR, his mother was certainly killed before he was stolen and sold. Hes believed to be less than five months old and already his short life has been filled with tragedy.
The rescue team said he was so lifeless when they got to him, they thought he was already dead, stating, He was lying corpse-like with his arms folded across his chest and this, along with a lack of hair and grey flaking skin, made him look almost mummified in his cardboard coffin.
As a result of his treatment, Gito was dehydrated, malmourished and suffering from sarcoptic mange. The good news, however, is that he miraculously survived the nine hour journey to IARs orangutan rescue center in Ketapang, where medical treatment began immediately and hes now receiving round-the-clock attention.
