West Virginia man calls 911 and turns over drug hoard after hearing president’s speech on addiction

President Barack Obama visited West Virginia last week to address the state’s epidemic drug addiction — and one man was so inspired he called 911 and turned over a substantial collection of drugs.

Obama spoke Oct. 21 about reducing the demand for opioids, including heroin and prescription painkillers, at a community center in Charleston, where he met with parents and others whose loved ones have battled addiction.

A man from nearby Cross Lanes repeatedly called 911 that same day and asked for help with his drug addiction before dispatchers finally sent Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies to his home.

He placed his hands on the wall when deputies arrived, and he told them that he had watched TV coverage of the president’s speech and asked for help.

The man, whose name was not released, told deputies he was a heavy drug user but hoped to “live a drug-free life for his mother” after watching Obama’s speech, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

He showed deputies a cooler where he kept a set of digital scales, 16 Suboxone packs and patches, marijuana, 19 grams of ecstasy and more than 150 pain pills.

The deputies seized the drugs and took them to an evidence technician for disposal, the sheriff’s office said.

No criminal charges were filed against the man, who is in his mid-30s, and deputies took him to a treatment center, where he voluntarily entered a drug addiction rehabilitation program.

“We applaud this person’s self-initiated efforts and wish him well in his recovery,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

drug addiction should be handled. Arresting addicts and putting them in prison is not working, nor will it ever.

This was West Virginia, USA, correct? Maybe there's a West Virginia in Canada or somewhere else.

WV is a red state only recently of course but the police are not as violent or prickish as other places. I hate going to Maryland or Virginia the cops there are really assholes.

Also the drug problem is so pervasive here that probably most cops have a friend or family member who has had the problem.

I actually think Obama made a mistake in WV. He came here and talked about the drug problem but did not really bring any money or announce any big initiatives to help. Many people in WV cannot get treatment due to the amount of people seeking it or the cost. Obama should have offered some direct help.

Many people here blame Obama, falsely I think, for the decline in coal revenue that is really hurting the state and causing them to cut back on social services. Many people, rightly I believe credit the drug problem to the poor economy. If Obama would have announced the funding of new treatment centers hiring staff and counselors in Southern WV it would have gone a LONG way to helping the dems in WV.

If Romney's any indication, it seems to me another thing that would impact the police-public interaction is the relatively small size
of the population in the area they serve. The interaction is more person-to-person, instead of authority-to-stranger.

There was a couple with a drug problem near my Mom's former home. They actually came from Baltimore to WV because it was cheaper and they could hide out and not be seen by so many people.

If the government could fund drug rehabs more, less funding would be needed for prisons.

Would this have helped some of those with addictions, or was there something else that you had in mind, because Republic0ns are not going to pass anything.

Obama said his 2016 budget — which has almost no chance of passing in the U.S. Congress — allocated nearly $100 million in new funding for overdose prevention programs and expanding medically assisted treatment programs.

The president also pointed out that the Affordable Care Act requires insurance carriers to cover substance abuse treatment just as they do for diabetes or heart disease.

Nice job, Mr. President and all those in WV who handled this person's surrender and especially those who'll manage his rehabilitation. I hope this story has a happy ending.

Congrats to the man's mother. Looks like you're getting your son back.

No matter how the police got involved. We should take 80% of the war on drugs budget and redirect it into clinics, rehab and education (including alcohol and tobacco).

No there's no more. That was the end of the sentence, because there isn't anything else logical to say about the matter.

Because that's what the police always do.

Except for the time they didn't shoot me in my bed as a 7 year old.

(Fortunately, I was saved by white privilege. If I were a young black kid, and the police were searching the house for my black armed robber uncle, I am sure I would have gotten popped)

Kudos to this Sheriff's department for not being a bunch of pricks and just taking the easy felony bust.

Some how I think things would have turned out different if the person had been black or brown.

Just saying....

But and however...

If we as a country used this approach for all peoples (no matter color, race, religion and sexual preference) not only would we save money, and lives but we would have a much stronger nation as people with addictions would be contributing members of society rather then barely living or in jail.
