And many militant groups - both Sunni and Shiite - were operating in Iraq even before the US went in. Among the most notorious Sunni terrorist group was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's group, which was in many ways a forerunner to ISIS.

The regime (or regimes - since Iraq is, of course, deeply divided along sectarian lines) that would almost certainly have replaced Saddam's was in all likelihood not going to be an American ally. In all probability, Iraq would have been even more chaotic than it is today. Or, America wouldn't have been directly involved in the chaos.

I just don't see how things would have been so much different.
