Manning sues DoD over military haircut

BY TOBIAS SALINGER
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Monday, November 9, 2015, 5:32 PM

... Manning, 27, “feels like a freak and a weirdo – not because having short hair makes a person <any> less of a woman – but because for her, it is undermines specifically recommended treatment and sends the message to everyone that she is not a 'real' woman,” the suit notes.

“Plaintiff fears that if her treatment regimen continues to be undermined due to Defendants’ refusal to allow her to follow female hair and grooming standards, her anguish will only escalate and she will not be able to survive the 35 years of her sentence, let alone the next few years.”

The suit names the Department of Defense, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and several top Army officials in charge of Manning’s prison term as defendants. A Defense Department spokesman declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing agency policy not to comment on pending litigation ...

like three-quarters of a million documents provided to a foreign website after the soldier had received a warning about security procedures. The sentence was quite inevitable, once allegations were proved, as a disincentive to other leak-inclined army intelligence specialists. Manning is unlikely to serve the full 35 years but the threats of self-harm in this lawsuit won't improve the soldier's status

Just because she's a prisoner doesn't mean she deserves inhumane treatment.

Your lack of empathy for a transgender woman seems better suited for another website.

Regardless of whether you think of Manning's imprisonment as appropriate or not, there is no reason to treat her inhumanely as a prisoner.

The article specifically refers to Manning as a woman, why do you insist on calling her a man?

Transphobia doesn't belong on DU.
