... each donation takes about an hour, with questioning, testing, etc. So if there are 10 stations, with 100 people in line, the end of the line will stand there about 10 hours.

We had the same thing after a plane crashed with many burned survivors. Once I calculated that I was more than 12 hours from giving blood, I walked out. Two days later, I gave blood after waiting about an hour. The need for blood lasts a long time, so no need for everyone to give on day 1.

I hope the donors that give up waiting will come back soon.

And it wouldn't hurt for us to give blood, too. I don't know if the American Red Cross gives to other countries, but there's a need in France, and a need here too.
