We can't let these small renegade groups bully the governments of the world. The governments were elected to protect their people and if a coalition of governments around the world put their mind and resources to it - they can defeat ISIS.
They need to stand up to them. They need to be relentless in their pursuit. They can't let up for a moment. They must keep ISIS on the run and dwindle down their numbers to nothing.
I believe it can be done - but it can't be done by one, two or three countries on their own. All world governments need to participate.

(13,598 posts)Yes, Islamic radicalism is a (set of) ideas, and it won't be possible to wipe it out altogether by force. But if it's an idea held by smaller numbers of people with fewer guns, it will do far less harm.

(1,604 posts)Ideas in conflict cause the problem and are passed on from generation to generation. Genocide (I pray) is hopefully what people are not thinking. The world is in a pickle.

(12,504 posts)and an imaginary after-life, nothing will change. People will continue to go into battle and kill each other because they operate under the illusion that their cause is righteous and that they will be rewarded with an eternal after-life in their version of heaven.
We need to send these Jesus and Allah characters into the rubbish heap of our primitive history and teach children the sound principles of reality. Science, mathematics, technology, not catechism, the quran, the bible or any of that other religious garbage.
Get smart people and force a change of school curriculum world wide. Human history, if we have much left, will look back on us doing face palms at the shame we bring upon ourselves for worshiping gods and deities that should have been shunned long ago.
We need to start a major change soon or we will wreck the planet for everyone that follows us.
Bombing, artillery, IEDs, snipers, drones, tanks, submarine launched cruise missiles, etc. sure are not doing anything to improve the intellectual landscape, time to get smart and stop promoting this supernatural spiritual bullshit.

(24,565 posts)on that rubbish heap? I don't recall either of those groups rushing into battle. I am not sure how forcing a change of school curriculum world wide fits into a liberal or progressive agenda. Sounds more like a dictator of the world.

(12,504 posts)And EVERY other religion that worships sky ghosts has to stop brainwashing the formative minds of children that there is a god that will give them eternity in their version of heaven by following their religious rules. That is dictatorship.
Religion and its gods served its purpose during our pre-scientific history when we were ignorant of the facts of science. Now religion and gods are used by imbeciles to promote political powers and make idiotic statements like gay people cause hurricanes and forest fires. Total nonsense.
The liberal progressive agenda is to advance knowledge and environmental safeguards to make this a better world for humans and all living things by dealing with reality. It has nothing to do with dictatorship. It is conservative principles that teach that religion and gods are our foundation that we now know offers false hope and is not based on reality.

But we will never be able to shoot or bomb our way to victory over an emotion.

(80,708 posts)How do you help people throw off the mental shackles of hate, authoritarianism, religion, and puritanism?
Seems to me that hate, authoritarianism, puritanism, and religious fundamentalism are some of the big problems, here.

(710 posts)ISIS is not a conventional fighting entity the same way that a government and its army are. ISIS is made up mostly of people who volunteer to fight under religious extremism, they think that dying in what they consider to be defending their religion will result in them living eternally in heaven, a place that they consider the ultimate destination.
ISIS are not one big conventional army, they will not surrender like a normal army even if you invade them with troops to remove and deny them swaths of land, instead ISIS will just splinter off into many smaller groups of fighters who will conduct hit and run attacks like they did in Iraq for a decade.
You cannot destroy ISIS by military means, yes they are a fighting force but they exist as a fighting force because they represent an idea to many disaffected youths who start to believe that this world has neglected them and getting to heaven sooner rather than later is a good idea.
The best way to destroy the idea of wanting to get to heaven as soon as possible to escape this unjust and hard world is to make the world a better place for everybody and not just a certain segment of the world's population.
One way for us to start to do this in the western world is to stop our hypocrisy in our foreign policies, the minute we do that we take away one huge weapon that these extremist groups are using to attack us.
