Caliph:a question about isis aka deash

I admit, I ask this question in the hopes to hear from those who know, especially the muslim Duers.

As I understand it, Al-Baghdaddi is claiming to be the Caliph.

Is the Caliph a singular, in other words, can there be only one Caliph, as there can only be one Pope or Archbishop of Canterbury?

Is there an established way to proclaim/elect a Caliph.

and admittedly the last and possibly prickly part:

If Baghdaddi is proclaiming to be the Caliph, is he a possible heretic?
