As of the time of this writing, governors of 18 states have vowed to not allow Syrian refugees into their borders. Aside from violating the U.S. Constitution, this is also exactly how ISIS wants the West to respond to the terror attacks in Paris.
Syrians leaving their country en masse, risking life and limb to walk thousands of miles and cross oceans to flee their home country, prompted ISIS to issue jealous public statements. As Aaron Zelin, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy explained, the Syrian exodus undermines ISIS prime argument that their caliphate is an ideal refuge for Muslims around the world.
If it was, individuals would actually go there in droves since its so close instead of 100,000s of people risking their lives through arduous journeys that could lead to death en route to Europe, Zelin wrote.
In one public statement, which one Washington Post writer said sounded like a note from a jilted ex, an ISIS spokesperson said Muslims should ideally seek to live in a caliphate where Sharia law is strictly enforced, rather than infidel countries in the West. The man in the video rhetorically asked, Would you exchange what is better for what is less?
The Post also pointed out that it was extremely unusual for the suicide bomber whose Syrian passport was found at the scene of the blast to have brought his passport along for a suicide mission, unless he wanted it to be found. And as this Belgian media outlet pointed out, the passport found at the scene was likely a fake, since a man was found traveling in Serbia with that same exact passport.
If a suicide bomber carried along a fake Syrian passport to a suicide bombing, it stands to reason that he wanted authorities to find it in order to cast fear and doubt of Muslims Syrian refugees, in particular amongst a tense Western nation already suspicious of Muslims in light of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. Thus, if the United States were to refuse Syrian refugees after the Paris attacks and paint them all as potential terrorists, it would be a major win for ISIS.
If the governors of these 18 states really wanted to make a stand against ISIS, they should follow Governor Hickenlooper of Colorados compassionate example while reaffirming that the safety of his states residents is a top priority, Hickenlooper is still accepting Syrian refugees and promising to screen each one thoroughly. A welcoming response from the US is exactly what ISIS doesnt want for the tens of thousands of Syrian refugees seeking asylum in our borders.

It's an embarrassment.
What a relief to see some Democrats take a stand for compassion over fear.

(58,785 posts)If we let our standards down and are no longer as proud after as before, they win big.
From the NY Times Editorial Board: "It is impossible to prevent all violence by hate-filled sociopaths and ideologues who are willing to die, and confronting the extremist threat from ISIS and other terrorist groups will require many strategies. But none of them require demolishing the values that are the heart of democratic societies, including the free flow of people and information. Banning all refugees, as some in America and Europe are demanding, would be an ineffective and tragic capitulation to fear. Governments should improve border controls and vigilance, but expanding wiretapping and other surveillance in free societies must be resisted."

(5,621 posts)is a way to support them. We don't have enough jobs for our citizens. With thousands coming in to the country, won't there be more anger toward immigrants? Already there is anger that immigrants can get welfare easily and can get loans easier. Believe me, there are rumblings in the trenches.
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people fleeing from oppression, especially when that oppression is our fault (not actually OUR fault, but the fault of the people who run this government). It's just that we have to change the way the poor are treated in this country. There has to be a monumental shift to a more socialist society. We have to start talking seriously about a minimum income as well as a minimum wage.

(82,383 posts)right wingers think they have an excuse to indulge in a type of bigotry. They feel the "PC" crowd is victimizing them by calling out their bigotries against other Americans. 911 came along and they were relived to find a group they'd be allowed to hate and are appalled that even that is viewed negatively.
