Engineering graduates are leading the way in sustainable development across Asia

AS exciting green and intelligent construction projects and developments are popping up across Asia and beyond, now is the time to consider a career in engineering. Chinese financed ports, oil pipelines and dams are being built across the world from Rio de Janeiro to Samoa, as increased global infrastructure development has seen the demand for highly skilled engineering graduates grow. Environment-friendly design is a key requisite in Thailand and other countries, as businesses look for ergonomic and modern designs, which won’t cause lasting damage to their carbon footprint. From bicycle parks to water-recycling systems, multinationals are looking for engineers who can produce sleek, state-of-the-art designs, promoting energy-saving and green thinking.

With China having unveiled a plan to construct the “One Belt, One Road”—a land-and-sea version of the once East-West Silk Road trading route, Quartz reports, it’s an exciting time to choose to study a degree in engineering. Not to mention the Asian giant revealing plans for a 840 kilometer high-speed railroad, linking China to Laos and Thailand at a cost of around $7 billion.

Population growth and the boom in mega cities across Asia means that increasingly large-scale engineering projects are now highly in demand, to meet with the strain placed on prior road and rail networks. As China aims to turn the country into a “science powerhouse” by 2020, the country is looking towards increasing engineering and technological development. Scientific advances contributed 51.7 percent to China’s economic growth in 2011, as the country looks to upgrade its industrial base, reduce air pollution and address growing inequality, Journalist’s Resource reports. The need for forward-thinking engineers and graduates from world-class engineering schools and institutions is increasing.

As industry booms across Asia, infrastructure and transport links need to be both effective and sustainable. Increased global awareness in relation to the importance of ethical construction and development means that employers are increasingly on the hunt for students and graduates who can meet with differing requirements and cater to greener contractors. Gone are the days of engineers designing purely functional projects; sustainability, innovation and modernization are now top of construction requirements, as engineering too has changed with the times.
