Schumer: Refugee pause may be necessary

Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), the third ranking member of the Senate Democratic leadership, on Tuesday said it may be necessary to halt the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the United States.

Republicans immediately seized on Schumer’s comment, which breaks with other Democrats who have argued against halting the program.

Schumer, however, declined to take the option off the table ahead of a special briefing scheduled for Wednesday afternoon on the process that is now used to vet refugees entering the United States.
“We’re waiting for the briefing tomorrow, a pause may be necessary. We’re going to look at it,” he said.

Schumer is widely expected to become leader of Senate Democrats in the next Congress, after Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) retires.

A spokeswoman for Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) highlighted Schumer’s statement as an example of “bipartisan concern” over refugees.

Schumer should be ashamed of himself. It isn't that much different when Jews were trying to escape Germany during World War II, and the U.S. wouldn't accept them.

Schumer should NOT be the rubber stamped leader of the Senate Democrats

in the area where I grew up. We moved to a town where there were a disproportionate number of these people. I assumed they wanted to live just right there, since they didn't appear to have diverse populations elsewhere, that I was aware of.

I can tell you, they did not integrate. They bought halls and other buildings and put fences around them to keep others out. Those properties were for the use of their people only.

I went to school with them and made friends with a couple of them. It wasn't your normal friendships though. They had feelings that were deeply rooted in them. Resentment. Contempt. Those dark feelings were towards Americans and in-fact other middle easterners, which I thought was even more strange. Not me though, other Americans. I was their friend. They weren't violent jihadists, that I know of, but I also wouldn't go over to their houses to play either. It was so abnormal and uncomfortable from what I was accustomed to growing up elsewhere. It made me think twice about things in ways where I would wonder about my own survival if the situation presented itself. That scared the hell out of me.

The world's human populations as it is, exploding, resources what they are, dwindling, there has to come a time where each nation takes responsibility for their own self inflicted problems.

the African American community in Iowa at that time integrated even less.

I can also tell you that the Irish, Italians and other ethnic groups didn't integrate well coming into the country initially either.

"they bought halls and other building and put fences around them to keep others out. Those properties were for the use of THEIR people only."

Gee, perhaps that was because of the racism that existed in the country, and don't feed me the line there was no racism. Growing up in Iowa I had my fill of it. From being called a "Christ killer" by neighborhood kids, expression of I got "jewed", or Jewboy were quite common, A Catholic baby sitter telling me I would be condemned to internal damnation because I was Jewish. Of course Jews were not allowed into certain golf courses or clubs, and could not buy property in certain areas.

Well we sure showed the Japanese Americans during WWII what we thought of anyone different, by stealing their property, and sending them off to internment camps. The violence inflicted against Iranian Americans was a disgrace during the Iranian hostage crisis.

Acts of violence against middle eastern Americans has been increasing, and you wonder why they build their own halls?

So do other groups which involve religious, and other class criteria.

"time for each nation to take responsibility for their own self inflicted problems"....

REALLY? If the United States decides to invade Iraq based on a lie, is that their "own self inflicted problem"?

This may come as strange, but MOST countries in the middle east are NOT democracies, and the people living in those countries have very little control.

I see you have an aviator of Bill Clinton. I am curious why, since Hillary, and all the other Democratic candidates do not believe in the Xenophobic essay you just presented

All 4 of my grandparents were born in Europe. The remarks made to me and my family were disgusting. One mother would not let her children play with me because my grandmother was foreign born. Jews, Roman Catholics, Blacks, Italians, Hungarians, you name it -- not WASP and they were shit in the eyes of the VEDDY white folk who populated the country club.

I don't think things have changed much in this little town...and I am so glad that my parents moved to the West Coast just before my 14th birthday!

Yeah, Jews were way at the bottom of the list of acceptable to the WASP community. My mother has denied her Jewish ancestry for as long as I remember and until the day she died. Gag me. What got to me also? Those of the orthodox faith who would join the Episcopal Church because of that was acceptable whereas being a member of the (fill in the blank) Orthodox Church was not.

The funny part? My grandparents ran the best bars, night clubs and restaurants in the whole area and were far more successful than those WASP azzhats that looked down on them.

Yeah, I get it...totally!

has traditionally prided itself on accepting refuges from war torn countries, though immigrants have always struggled when coming in. Ironic since our country is immigrants.

I really quite frustrated by such xenophobic posts that sit in their soft comfortable chairs, and blame the refuges for their plight.

I was merely expressing thoughts from my childhood.

I can say whatever comes from memories I express, because they're my memories. Sorry if you're offended or that you want to read more into what I said than what I wrote, but I reaffirm what I said.

You lost me on a lot of stuff you wrote. It doesn't dignify an answer. However, on my avatar, I voted for Bill Clinton and saw the garbage he was put through when he worked tirelessly to make our country better and in fact, made it better in so many ways. When he said "my fellow Americans, the state of the union has never been better" IIRC, it was indisputable. In my mind, he's top 10 U.S. presidents of all time. He won against the odds. He & VP Gore passed legislation against the odds. He stood up against the rethugs and he stood up for those who supported his policies. All admirable qualities of being a democrat.

What makes me a democrat is that, democrats are a big tent party. They don't resort to name calling and demanding that all of their constituents fall in line with they're narrow minded views. And they don't throw a tantrum when one of their own expresses views they may not share.
