Islamic State Says 'Schweppes Bomb' Used To Bring Down Russian Plane

By Ahmed Aboulenein and Lin Noueihed

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamic State's official magazine carried a photo on Wednesday of a Schweppes drink it said was used to make an improvised bomb that brought down a Russian airliner over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula last month, killing all 224 people on board.

The photo showed a can of Schweppes Gold soft drink and what appeared to be a detonator and switch on a blue background, three simple components that if genuine are likely to cause concern for airline safety officials worldwide.

"The divided Crusaders of the East and West thought themselves safe in their jets as they cowardly bombarded the Muslims of the Caliphate," the English language Dabiq magazine said in reference to Russia and the West. "And so revenge was exacted upon those who felt safe in the cockpits."

Western governments have said the plane was likely brought down by a bomb and Moscow confirmed on Tuesday it had reached the same conclusion, but the Egyptian government says it has still not found evidence of criminal action.

Islamic State also published a photo of what it said were passports belonging to dead Russians "obtained by the mujahideen". It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the published photos.

I'm betting there's going to be increased scrutiny of the food and beverage handlers and their carts in future.

to get people past security, but assuming they do close that gaping hole, a can would show up on the xray, and that exceeds the liquid limit for carry-on.

It could very well limit what people might be allowed to carry in checked bags as well. Say goodbye to that spray can of deodorant and hairspray, too!

So, we're left with the food/beverage service carts.

Unless it was the ground crew inspector whose job it was who did it.

They want westerners whose Arabic may be pretty poor (good enough for formulaic prayers, perhaps, but not much more), so they need an English outlet. Remember, they are really good at PR, marketing and propaganda.

It's almost required. Remember that the Tsarnaev brothers got the plans for their little boom-booms from an article entitled "Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom" or words to that effect. I think that publication was called "Inspire."

Here's the background on Dabiq.
