Why my state won't turn refugees away - Gov Jack Markell, Delaware

Our state may be small but we have a big heart, great beer, great beaches and an awesome governor PLUS the home of the bestest Vice President EVER. Thank you Jack Markell for showing us how it's done!

Why my state won't turn refugees away

By Jack A. Markell, Governor

<<<snip>>>
Rather than use the attacks in Paris to make a political statement about closing our border to people in dire need, let's understand the facts:

• Refugee admissions are subject to the highest level of security checks of any category of travelers;

• Biographic and biometric information is vetted against a broad array of databases, including those of law enforcement and the intelligence community, to confirm an applicant's identity, check for criminal history, and identify information that can support the work of our trained interviewers;

• A refugee applicant cannot be approved until all required security checks have been completed and cleared; and

• The full process is finished before any Syrian refugee would be allowed to cross the Atlantic.

The President has rightly kept his commitment to resettle at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the United States within a year.

If his administration decides to place some of those refugees in Delaware, we will work with our federal partners, while expecting them to recognize the federal responsibility to provide or pay for services these individuals may need.

and personally I find nothing funny about the fact that our governor was only one of a handful of Democratic Governors willing to stand up and support Obama instead of saying absolutely nothing like so many other Democratic governors have done. I mean I find nothing silly about that.

he's the national leader in employment of people with disabilities (believe it or not, Snotty Scotty Walker is not far behind! ). It's just... you know, tollbooths 'n' stuff.

Figured he and Carney were going to do a Governor/House swap like Carper/Castle did back in the 90s.

Apparently we're breeding some Christine O'Donnell-ish wannabes below the canal. It seems to coincide with the planting of mega churches. What worries me is that it's creeping north.

Love 'em both!

Up until this afternoon, there was speculation (and some hope) that the new UD Pres would have either been Biden or Markell.
