11th-Hour Detour Puts Family in Connecticut as Indiana Bars Syrian Refugees

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/18/nyregion/11th-hour-detour-puts-family-in-connecticut-as-indiana-bars-syrian-refugees.html?_r=2

A Syrian refugee family, after waiting for three years in Jordan to be approved to come to the United States, was finally set to land in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

Instead, after Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana said on Monday that he would no longer accept Syrian refugees in his state, the family of three will be starting their new life in New Haven.

Mr. Pence is one of 26 governors who have objected to the placement of Syrian refugees in their states in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks. Their stance has the agencies that handle resettlements for the United States government scrambling to place families. The Syrian family was the first to be redirected.

Republican governors such as Mr. Pence, Republican presidential candidates, the Democratic governor of New Hampshire and other lawmakers have singled out Syrian refugees as a security risk after one suspect killed in the Paris attacks was found with a Syrian passport. As the Obama administration hoped to convince governors that the refugee program already includes extensive vetting and security measures, aid workers from the Midwest to the Northeast improvised.

On Tuesday morning, the head of Indiana’s division of family resources sent a letter to Carleen Miller, the executive director of Exodus Refugee Immigration in Indianapolis, informing her that the state was seeking to have the arrival of the Syrian family due this week and all future Syrian arrivals “suspended or redirected to another state that is willing to accept Syrian placements.”

I guess the states can refuse refugees.

The states can not legally refuse refugees but they can withdraw resources that were needed to relocate them such as lodging, help to find a job, etc.. They can not police their borders and round up syrians in their state however.

Or probably will. These groups have to work in the communities and state agencies so they are likely to just accommodate these "demands".

Any Syrian refugee with the resources to rent or buy a place to live cannot be stopped from doing so in IN, but IN can decide how they want to allocate their own resources in providing or financing assistance.

It's all very much on the up-and-up, post hoc punishment of non-governmental organizations for refusing to abide by political demands.

Easy access to NYC and Boston. Right on Long Island Sound. Yale offers many wonderful attractions such as its art gallery (free and open to the public!) and Peabody Museum of Natural History (similar to the one in Cambridge, but not as well organized ). And, of course, pizza. I wonder if we're about to discover a Syrian take on pizza.

The Elm City could always use a nice Middle Eastern market and/or restaurant, or maybe a pita bakery.

Pence is a fucking asshole. He could have used this opportunity to show how compassionate Americans (and Christians) can be, but instead he showed the world the simple-mindedness of so many Americans and why we as a nation are viewed as xenophobic.

BTW, I lived in CT for 20 years and it is a far better place than Pence's shithole. It is Pence and his asshole RepubliKKKlans that are making Indiana a shithole, not the Democrats or DUer's.

More Syrian's in America. For Gods sakes...
bring our troops home....set up safer borders and educate our kids and give them
a chance to have a career, instead of a JOB!!

And let the people over there TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN PROBLEMS.

Seems pretty simple
