As of 4pm Friday, several Houston organizations complied with Governor Abbott's deadline order to stop providing help to Syrian refugees.
It comes in response to the deadly terror attacks in Paris on November 13th.
A letter from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission went out to several local non-profits this week asking the organizations to comply with the Governor's request by Friday afternoon.
However, some say it comes across as an ultimatum: comply or risk funding.
"It puts them in a situation that I think is very uncomfortable," said immigration attorney Gordon Quan regarding the letter. "This is basically saying, 'Don't do resettlement. If you do resettlement of these Syrian refugees, you may be endangering the whole program that you have'."

(41,694 posts)He panders to the nutjobs every chance he gets.
His history consists of "I got mine and screw you"
When he was AG he had the state put in a special wheelchair ramp to his office in the Capitol while arguing in Federal court that TX did not have to comply with the ADA
He got millions in his lawsuit over the accident that put him in a wheelchair, then he jumped on the tort reform bandwagon.
Every time I drive past the governor's mansion I flip him the bird

(23,730 posts)of course the charities are always horrified by the idea (since they'd be swamped as the economy collapses without state support and there'd be no donations whatsoever); and now they're barking orders at them and managing to make *charity workers* dick-punchingly angry at them

(16,191 posts)A governor can legally tell his state agencies not to cooperate with federal programs.
A governor CANNOT tell state agencies OR nonprofits funded by the state that they cannot provide help to people already living in his state, based solely on the residents nation of origin.
There's a HUGE legal difference between declining to assist the federal government in settling refugees, and refusing public funds to people who are already legal residents based on their ethnicity.
