That would be kind of entertaining to watch... a presidential candidate arrested for kidnapping.

It is a condition of being able to attend. When you rent a venue, you can invite or disinvite whomever you like. Even if it means, yes, you really have to wear that bridesmaid's dress that looks horrible on you.

They strap you in until the ride is over.

They rent the hall, they make the rules for your admission. Don't like the rules, and you are not allowed back in the park. If it's your job to cover this campaign, go back to your employer and say they won't let you back into one of their events again.

This is all by consent.

The escorts are there to see that if someone breaks the rules, they are escorted off the premises and blacklisted from ever attending again. Which is perfectly legal.

They might grouse a little (unofficially and definitely not for attribution, which makes Katy Tur's tweet sort of almost courageous), but they know T Rump will freeze them out if they complain. And none of them want to give up the ratings bonanza of airing every stupid opinion T Rump blurps up.

IIRC the "conspirators" were ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and Fox. If that consortium laid down a set of rules and stuck together in insisting on them, it would be Trump who'd have to back down. Will his campaign insist on bathroom escorts and the like if it means they don't get coverage on any of those networks? I don't think so.

Maybe I just love the image of Sean Hannity finding his inner 60s protester and sternly intoning, "An attack on one will be answered by all."

They're wrapped around the vulgarian's short fingers, and both sides know it. T Rump is like crack for them, and he plays them like a fucking Stradivarius. As long as T Rump was just selling his rotten brand, I couldn't be bothered with the popular media's obeisances. But the longer T Rump's candidacy endures, the more legitimate it looks. None of the outlets wants to miss out on what could be an historic White House run and its good ratings, and T Rump knows how to play a favorite and set them against each other so that they don't stick together. Hannity is far more likely to say, "An attack on one will see me as the first to join the pig pile."

unless Sanders is elected. He's the last train out of Dodge.

The downward spiral will no longer be reversible. And V.I. Lenin was absolutely correct when he stated that fascism is capitalism in the final stage of decay.

If there were a hereafter, I somehow imagine Messrs Jefferson, Washington, Madison and the rest watching, on some cosmic viewscreen like that on the bridge of the Enterprise, the final flatlining of their experiment, all the while screaming bloodcurdling and murderous 18th century oaths and furiously flinging empty whisky bottles at the screen. Dr. Franklin has probably headed for the opium pipe by now.
