Mike Tobin: Essentially the question he's getting to is why is there not outrage when there's black on black violence.
Brendan Glover: Because crime is going to happen. Wherever you go, crime happens. And the people that are here to serve and protect are a part of that problem. So it becomes a problem when you can't even call 911 and feel like you're safe to protect you from people that are committing crimes. That's the point I'm trying to make.
Glover essentially argued that while crime can be shocking (earlier he and Tobin pointed to the murder of a 9-year-old as one example of a horrible local incident), it's also disturbing that black communities are genuinely scared of calling for help when that crime happens, because they're by and large dealing with police forces that disproportionately shoot and kill black Americans. In other words, everyone expects violent criminals to exist, and that's obviously tragic and dangerous but at the very least people shouldn't have to believe that their government-sanctioned public protectors are also dangerous.

(7,875 posts)I'm sure Hannity picked up the slack for Mr Wishy-Washy's very un-Fox-like reporting after the edit. (Just before the cut you can hear him starting to try and steer the conversation back to black-on-black crime)

(249 posts)But this is the heart of "black lives matter", because they do matter. This black on black violence is the heart of the question -but no one wants to answer it! We live in such an individualistic society that we can't see it's all connected, we're all connected. The "black" community needs help. They somehow need to value education, two parent stable families -and it NOT being seen as white. "Crime is going to happen" is a bullshit answer when 80% of the black people killed in Minneapolis (this year) are killed by other black people!
This is a problem that government can't solve, politicians can't solve, and capitalism can't solve. It seems to be a problem of the heart. It seems to me only some religious or cultural movement (like MLK) can regrow the roots necessary and heal the wounds of generations. I have no idea how to help as a white person, but I wish with all my heart I could.
The police are a symptom, not the cause. Wake up America.

56% of violent crimes committed against whites are perpetrated by whites.
62% of violent crimes committed against blacks are perpetrated by blacks.
SOOOOOOOOO WHATTTTTTT!!!!!!
The point is whites can call the cops...blacks fear for their very lives if they do.
Take this black on black crap and tell your story walking!
MIRT! Clean up in aisle 3!

(73,631 posts)All in all, the chances of the police harming me are much greater than me being the target of crime. Predatory police are everywhere, predatory criminals are not.
Not to mention the fact that there have been victims of crime and those in need of police assistance who are attacked by the cops themselves.
When you can't depend on the police to do their jobs properly, or are more concerned with being victimized by the police than you are of the criminals themselves, then the police are at the crux of the problem.
