NC town says: Don't blame us for nearby KKK rallyHARMONY, NC (AP) -- A small North Carolina town is putting out word it doesn't condone and has nothing to do with a planned rally by members of the Ku Klux Klan.
The town of Harmony says it just happens to be the nearest town to the property where Klan members are meeting Saturday.
Harmony has about 600 residents and no stop lights. The town posted a notice on its Web site that says has no racial problems and is "a small, peaceful town that loves everyone no matter their skin color."
A white-supremacist Klan group called the Loyal White Knights says it will hold a "cross-lighting" that only whites are invited to attend. Members of Occupy groups plan a counter-demonstration ...

HARMONY -- Don Minor was disturbed when he learned the Ku Klux Klan was planning to stage a rally and cross burning near this rural community in Iredell County on Memorial Day weekend.
A veteran who served in Army reconnaissance in Vietnam in 1969-70, Minor spent Saturday afternoon with dozens of other protesters in the town square ...
"Bigotry wrapped in religion is still BIGOTRY," one sign said. Others said, "Harmony is a place of love" and "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
Union Grove resident Maggie Gordon felt compelled to organize the demonstration after learning of the Klan's plans. She spent the week making posters and phoning people to encourage them to take a stand, a film crew from National Geographic in tow to chronicle her efforts for a documentary ...

HARMONY - The Klan rally and "cross lighting" planned for sundown Saturday near Harmony apparently didn't go as planned.
A group called the Loyal White Knights had advertised the rally for Saturday night, but as the sun fell, the property where neighbors said it would take place was quiet and empty.
Those neighbors said cars drove back and forth on Piney Grove Road all day looking for the rally, even driving down private gravel driveways trying to find it.
One exasperated neighbor finally strung a thick wire across the entrance to his property and taped up a "PRIVATE PROPERTY, No Trespassing" sign ...

HARMONY, NC (WBTV) - About a hundred protestors descended on the small town of Harmony Saturday afternoon.
The group held signs reading "Peace and Love" and other messages of dislike of the thought of the Klu Klux Klan holding a rally there ...
Whisperings of where the rally was supposed to be held left many folks wanting a peek. WBTV watched as locals and out-of-towners scrambled to find the spot. It caused quite a headache for some residents who watched their quiet surroundings turn into a circus. WBTV went by one of the spots locals say they saw numerous cars come and go throughout the afternoon. A crew did spot people in KKK shirts but were told the rally wasn't being held there.
"It sounds like something out of 1950. The human race needs to move forward. We have bigger problems than this," one protestor said ...

Bet he's going to do his shopping in the next town the other direction now. Good riddance.
NC has always been a little weird about the Klan, despising it publicly but supporting it on the quiet as long as it doesn't embarrass people with big marches and demonstrations.
