About a motherless baby elephant raised by a lady working at an animal clinic or refuge in Africa
The elephant grew so attached to her that when she left for a few weeks to take care of some business the elephant went into a deep depression, wouldn't eat and ended up dying, very sad.

Then...

...and now:

I think it was her daughter's wedding that took her away. I don't remember her exact words, but she was clearly pained in retelling that story... it was hard to watch. But from that they learned the importance of rotating caregivers so that those helpless little orphans wouldn't become too attached to any one person.

touching, sad, infuriating, but also enlightening. A mother of three cubs had to leave the pride to go hunting over a period of a couple days, leaving the cubs proximate to, but isolated from, her younger male cousins. Suffice to say that when she returned to discover what had happened, she growled and bared her teeth in anger at the males, who - the narrator informed us - would ALL (seven total male cousins) be cast out from the pride, forever, most to die of starvation.

Several levels on which to process the show, but yes, animals most certainly DO have emotions and thoughts.
