(29,414 posts)I'd say a group is worth it. Are there Meet-Up groups for it in your area? As it's often a "nerd" game, you might find news about groups at comic book stores and college campuses. I've seen people even play over Skype
I'd love to get a set of these:

(1,937 posts)crystal caste dwarven metal (silver (stainless) 16mm)
for me the set is special too, bought it with my first paycheck from my first job in the US just as my work permit 'became' a greencard
so it's a celebratory thing too

(29,414 posts)I haven't bought dice in a long time, so haven't see what else is available (or needed for new gaming methods.)

(1,937 posts)leather or cloth to roll on ...rolling those on 'card stock' (like a game board) or a wood or glass table...umm not a good idea
crystalcaste.com
lotta other manufacturers out there but i really like their dwarven series
they do dwarven 'metal' (3 color bronze brass and stainless i think and different sizes)
dwarven stone (semi precious and birthstones..so you could have for instance jasper dice set)
dwarven special stone (from meteorites and so on..price goes up...sharply)
and then of course the plastics

(29,414 posts)Of course, the stretched ones on their site caught my eye. I've never seen that design before, and have to wonder how they roll compared to 'normal' shapes.
The only metal dice I have were made in a materials science class back in drafting college. They basically turned us all loose in a metal shop without any instruction. So, I messed around on the milling machine and made a pair of brass 6-side dice and one extra-large aluminum one. None are very accurate in shape or placement of the dots, but they wowed my friends for a while
They also made dents in things, even with leather mats

(1,937 posts)and then the large d20 (size golfball) but i rolled it once on the store pineboard floor, left marks and went..naah i'll settle for the d20 in the 'set'
welcome (link)
here's another more for finding games and stuff for games
(incl char sheets)

the stretch roll very well (i've been allowed to roll a few of a friend of mine (she's a dice 'fanatic') had to bless the dice after so i didn't 'ruin their juju'
the only metal i had seen before going to that store were the metal ones i made and 'shaved' in machine shop (and i did that to plastic ones too
(shaving has a 'special' meaning as i'm sure you know)
but our room mate at the time said 'you get a green card, i'll dm a 1ed add with the kids and everyone' so i needed dice and now...they go everywhere with me
kinda funny 2 people make same kinda dice ( mine rolled 2 and 5 :-p )
*clinks dice* honoured to meet ya

Metal dice (and the oddest ones):
Yeah, one of the brass dice is blank, no longer remember why. I guess I could always paint numbers or letters on it to customize it. They all make satisfying *clunks* when they roll. The one translucent green die was formerly a set for cheating at craps (not that I ever played or cheated.) It would have been all fives. I either lost it, or another gamer took it.
Your friend that requires one to bless them after rolling is much like how people that use oracle cards treat their decks. I'm curious what her blessing is (The spell of making from Excalibur comes immediately to mind )
Honored to meet you, too!

(1,937 posts)for the 4 corners of the world i call on my kin odin thor freya and heimdall
*waved some sage smoke over dice*
she was happy
that big d6 is that alloy (aluminum)? i see you drilled 4 big and 2 small, weight compensation to the 1?
i did play and i did cheat (craps)..but it was an area where cheating was expected
we need to get you playing!
http://www.enworld.org/
or a group in here, can you imagine the 'table' discussion around the game of d&d if we had 10 or so DU people?! LOL
we'd solve the world problems in between slaying kobolds!
kentauros
(29,414 posts)And no, nothing about it is accurate. I have no idea how much material was removed in comparison to the other side. It's probably unbalanced. At the same time, it's so big that it's too difficult to get a decent roll out of it anyway. It's really just for pulling out of the bag and making people go "Wow!"
A DU group would be great
Although, my characters tend to be either healers, or thieves. I might not be as well-liked in the latter category, especially if we ever play any games of chance in bars/inns

(1,937 posts)'now...this is my wallet and that is your hand, when one goes missing so does the other' << said as ranger with 50% surprise attack and 2 attacks per round LOL
i'm thinking a group might be a good idea if naught else to start IRL games
i'm sure there is more of us than have represented here

(29,414 posts)I just took a look at the Gaming group here, but it's only for video games, it seems. Maybe we need to request the making of a RPG group. I've met plenty more DUers in the past that play or have played. Many of them hang out in the Lounge, too.
w0nderer
(1,937 posts)LOL that was a direct quote from a game i had a hobbit thief in my party and after 2 pickpocketing (failed) attempts...
the gaming group seems video game only
I'd like to see a board and roleplaying game
chess
othello
a d&d
autoduel
all of them

(6,261 posts)1st edition AD&D - still have all the books in excellent condition. I also played Gamma World, Draqonquest, Traveller, Runequest and several other games. Fun times.
Possibly a more general FRPG group would be better?
w0nderer
(1,937 posts)a 'generic' RPG group
i think it was first edition that i started with could be second (not sure) \so much fun and i found it easier than 3rd at least, still have an excel book based charsheet to calculate everything down to number of steps based on encumbrance and so on for that ed (which ever it was )LOL

(37,748 posts)I picked it up again last year after a thirty year hiatus (precise same group of dysfunctional idiots (plus two) that I played with 1984) . But unless you're looking for or advertising players, I don't think there would be any overarching theme or purpose of the group.

(8,217 posts)I haven't played in at least 4 years.(Most likely 7)
I considered running something, but it would have just been a D20 3.5 version that would use multiple sources.

(41,832 posts)I had a lot of role playing books, and it was fun to get together with friends and play. Unfortunately, most of my friends don't play much any longer. They are either into video games or are too busy in their lives to make time for it. If you have some friends who want to play, I say "Yes! go for it". Its a hella fun!
kentauros
(29,414 posts)Or there was about twenty years ago when I played it (I had a character that was like Magneto, only as a good guy.) It was a lot of fun, too, and thought you'd like to know about it with your interest in superheros
OnyxCollie
(9,958 posts)That was the superhero RPG I played in the 80's.

(29,414 posts)It was so long ago, I couldn't remember the name of it, only that it was fun
w0nderer
(1,937 posts)it is isn't it?!
it's kinda why i wanted a group here
seems to me the DU mindset might be more 'group' oriented than videogames (Nothing wrong, i like videogames) but i like sitting around a table or even skyping or what ever and playing a set of d&d as well
somehow it's more personal with d&d

yes it is
alphafemale
(18,497 posts)But I loved it.
Is it still as creative or mostly just a video game now.
w0nderer
(1,937 posts)you can still play outta the books only (how i play it, books+dice+charsheet)
re-animate your former love!
i just got (friend of mine) donated a full set (close) of 2nd ed and 1st ed ebooks
i was just thinking that frequently in games politics become an issue (having played once with a teapartier)
...so perhaps a dem rpg group could be cool
then i found
http://www.enworld.org/
it's not guaranteed dem but has cool features and resources
alphafemale
(18,497 posts)got books.
I really had fun with it.
It was a really imaginative fun thing which involved thinking for the most part.
on edit this was early '80.

(2,328 posts)Messed around with other RPGs too like vampire, GURPS, and most recently Pathfinder which I enjoyed. Not much time for it anymore tho.

(15,429 posts)tables back in '77. Started as a DM and rarely ever am I a player.
I've been playing ever since, but skipped 4E for Pathfinder (a couple of sessions with 4E were enough to convince me the rules sucked). I've got no desire to return to the WotC version with 5E. Ever since the Core Rules 2 CD plus the Expansion back in 2E, I've not been willing to play any RPG that does not have the core rules released electronically. I've been doing all my campaign preparation on computers since the 80s and simply do not want to return to having RPG books open at the same time when I should be easily able to access the core rules in a window on the computer.
w0nderer
(1,937 posts)yes, i want this group?
rpg and boardgames
(the gamers group is all video games)
we may not post much but imagine a cool game of only dems no...reps!
my first was 1 (this is after 3.5 was out) but we had kids and 1 is easy
we also did house rules so easy on the encumbrance
exactly i keep my books in pdfs and my charsheets in spreadsheets LOL
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)Although I also play video games. It's a great way to game when there's nobody else around.
me b zola
(19,053 posts)I play ddo, but my husband is a long time d&d player that would love to find a group on-line. Heck, this would be the thing that actually gets him to open his own DU account . Just don't take too much of his time, we have lots of work on the new home to do, not to mention our static ddo group with two of his navy buddies and one of their wives.
w0nderer
(1,937 posts)also there are online gaming systems
graphical (so past my computer) but for 'cool' puters they rock
i'm innoncent me b zola ...what happens due to a group isn't me :-p

(9,958 posts)D&D devolved into Dope and Drinkin', and that's all that should be said about that.
