This is a terrible story, but it would be helpful if the national media would give it 24/7 treatment to focus on the needs of the homeless in general and to remind us the Obama administration has had some significant success in getting homeless veterans into housing.

OLNEY -- A homeless veteran, beaten at a gas station in the Olney section of Philadelphia nearly eight months ago, has died.

The incident at the Sunoco in the 5500 block of North 5th Street was captured by a surveillance camera on April 7th.

The video shows 51-year-old Robert Barnes being pummeled by teens with a hammer, a piece of wood and punches, after police say a 10-year-old boy told his mother he got into an argument with Barnes.

The attack left Barnes in a coma.

The boy's mother, 34-year-old Aleathea Gillard, has been charged in the case, along with 24-year-old Shareena Joachim.

5. The three teens/preteens

have already been adjudicated in juvenile court and probably are incarcerated until 18. Seems reasonable to me. Hopefully the damage that the parents did can be corrected by then.

At one time there was a third adult, and all three were offerred a plea deal (something like 15 years) which they rejected. This was before the vet died. I think they were insane in rejecting the deal. Now they get to look at a murder charge.

I agree about the juveniles. The adults have the lion's share of responsibility and should face the full brunt of the charges. The younger participants should be salvaged, if at all possible.

10. Thanks for the links. Compared to the Trump incident, this story has hardly received any

coverage. It's too bad because it's the kind of story that might have inspired us to step up our efforts to help the homeless.
