Anyone know about a new pharmacy law?

My mom is quite upset and worried due to things happening at the pharmacy. She has taken a low dose of Ativan for years following a heart attack. Never deviated from the proper dosage, never had any issues at all. Starting two months ago, the pharmacy has been requesting her ID due to what they say is a new law. This is in Florida.

She began to worry when she went to pick up my meds. I am on pain management, so I'm on five meds, yet they aren't requesting ID. Same for her brother and his partner, same for a friend of hers. She feels like she's been singled out. Of course, she then went searching the internet and is convinced she was "red flagged" for some reason. Very upsetting for an already nervous person.

Does such a pharmacy law requiring ID now exist, or is something peculiar going on? I'm trying to help put her at ease. :S

There are several articles showing that Ativan is listed as a controlled substance (low potential for abuse) and pharmacies should ask for ID. I didn't go deep enough to see if this is state by state or required by the FDA...but apparently, asking for ID for this drug is not unusual.

Here in Ontario, recently new regulations were put in place re controlled drugs, narcotics & benzodiazepine type meds.

One regulation now requires a signature and Health Card # or other listed ID required from a person picking up any of the medications listed.

So I sincerely doubt that your Mother is at all targetted...she is most probably encountering new regulations... Which help to track who has picked up the medication... It is really a safety procedure to ensure that she or someone she has designated actually picks up her medication.

Here in Ontario, our pharmacy members spent a lot of time explaining the new rules to our customers....just so they would not become apprehensive like your mother.. If you call the pharmacy, they should absolutely be able to I explain the reason for the signature.

Ps. Re pain medication....In Ontario, narcotic meds need a signature... But some other non narcotic pain medication does not require a signature ...

I would pick up her morphine prescription and was never asked for ID. This was quite a few years ago here in North Georgia. Maybe the laws have changed since then.
