Please don't lock off threads on gun control

This is beyond the gungeon. I've had threads locked as have others, but this is now a national problem, not a shove-into-the-corner problem. Please, let's not segregate the discussion.

Planned Parenthood was still considered to be in the news when this happened. At the rate we're going, we may well be able to talk about guns in GD all we want, though that is cold consolation indeed.

Sad thing is right. It is now front and center. We cannot avoid its importance any more.

What is the real issue as far as I am concerned, is what we will do with DU's own gun thread. Do we countenance having them in our midst even tho there are implications that we do not and cannot help despising?

GUNS
News stories (and related content) from reputable mainstream sources about efforts to strengthen or weaken gun control legislation in any jurisdiction in the United States, national news stories (and related content) from reputable mainstream sources about high-profile gun crimes, and viral political content from social media or blogs that would likely be of interest to a large majority of DU members are permitted under normal circumstances.

Local stories about gun crime and "gun porn" threads showing pictures of guns or discussing the merits of various firearms are not permitted under normal circumstances and should be posted in the Gun Control and RKBA Group.

Open discussion of guns is permitted during very high-profile news events which are heavily covered across all newsmedia.

If this isn't high profle and heavily covered across all newsmedia, nothing is

I'd argue it's a national security issue. But certainly not beyond the pale of discussion.

There is very little support for prohibition. Even if there was a lot of support, it wouldn't work. It didn't work with booze, it doesn't work with drugs, and we refuse to secure our boarders.

Until the passage of the 1934 National Firearms Act you could walk into a sporting goods store or order from a catalogue and get a full-auto Thompson submachine gun or BAR. In the 80 years since? Fully automatic weapons have been very rare in private ownership or in the hands of criminals. So it CAN in fact work, assuming the political will to make it work. (And it's "borders".)

If it's not registered, it's taken away. You can keep your gun if you are legal and if not, you are going to jail.

Nothing will end all violence, but we can put a big dent in it and make our streets safer.

We already have laws for illegal possession of firearms. Judges give slaps on the wrist for offenders who are caught.

I can tell you I locked one gun thread n GDP .... only because it wasn't about the democratic primary, duplicate threads (same story) are locked in LBN .... sometimes a thread will be locked when a story is in its early stages (before it is clear that it is a big story).

They are following the SOP Guidelines as listed in the pinned thread at the top of GD. Right now is of course a big event and I cannot see any host wanted to lock them.

This host team is doing a good job. Lets be supportive of them, and not listen to the few that live to cause strife.
