A Russian Tanker Is Still Leaking Oil in the North Pacific

http://news.yahoo.com/russian-tanker-still-leaking-oil-north-pacific-202055181.html

Six days after running aground offshore of the North Pacific island of Sakhalin, a tanker carrying 200,000 gallons of oil was still leaking on Friday, according to an Alaskan conservation group.

The Nadezhda—Russian for “hope”—ran aground on a reef around 500 feet off the Russian port city of Nevelsk on Nov. 28, according to news reports, as well as information from Audubon Alaska.

“A Russian colleague told me today that the tanker is still on the rocks,” said Melanie Smith of Audubon Alaska. “About three miles of coastline has been oiled so far, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 birds.”

A marine conservation zone that holds a major sea lion rookery is near the leaking vessel, said Smith, as well as important habitat areas for thousands of seabirds.
