Despite widespread concerns, Branstad (R-IA) refuses to budge on Medicaid deadline

Des Moines, Iowa – Democrats are stepping up their criticism of Gov. Branstad’s plan to turn the state’s Medicaid program over to private companies, pointing to criticism from health care providers and others about the fate of the more than 500,000 people currently enrolled in the program.

“Given the magnitude of the change, it’s not surprising that Iowans have serious questions about Medicaid privatization and why the Branstad-Reynolds administration wants to press the program in the first place,” the Democrats said in a statement. “However, the administration has, to date, been unable to answer Iowans’ questions or address their concerns.”

The party made it clear it will aggressively challenge Branstad on the issue, and made it clear that Democratic strategists think the issue is a winner politically. In part, their strategy appears based on the hope that health providers, many of whom are reliably Republican, can be lured to switch their allegiance because Branstad’s plan will hit them hard.

Branstad’s plan would call for turning Medicaid patients over to private companies on Jan. 1, and the governor has rejected any call for delaying that effort.
