replacing guns with sex toys in photos of GOP politicians

Matt Haughey, probably best known as the founder of MetaFilter, decided on Friday evening to embark on a new project: transforming images of GOP presidential hopefuls holding guns into images of GOP presidential hopefuls holding dildos. He told Twitter about it:

That they can't stop thinking about dicks. Seriously. It's becoming a requirement, practically

It's pretty funny to me, but not for the reason it is for others, I suspect.

For grabbers, guns seem to always =dicks. Is that why they are always grabbing at them? I mean, jeez, how about some dinner first?

The more desperate among them will make preposterous and irrelevant claims about sexism, while others will pretend that gun marketing doesn't sexualize these weapons of death. Still others will will predictably get more upset about a few dick jokes than about thousands upon thousands of annual gun murders.

Also:

Yeah. The "anti gunners" are the ones who can't stop thinking about dicks.

That's just one of the more obvious ones, but you're lying to yourself if you pretend that gun ads aren't sexualized. If the gun zealots are the ones who are buying guns, then who do you think the ads are targeting?

Or do you get all fluttery inside when someone mentions a target?

At wal-mart.

Hell, in most of the same states, you can go to prison for something like 5 years for smoking a joint in your own house.

Wouldnt you agree that's fucked up, even if you have no problem with the availability of the firearms?

I support all sorts of personal rights.

Nobody should be able to withold my right to put substances into my own body, an effective means to defense, or whatever sort of sex toys I may or may not want. If I'm not actively hurting other myself, stuff it. No pun intended.

2A supporters on issues of personal freedom is too huge to ignore.

I think a rational approach to firearms ought to take into account the wide potential of mayhem from the things, but at the same time I don't think widespread prohibition/criminalization is either feasible or desirable from a personal freedom perspective.

I think registration, licensing, and some form of background checks are legitimate just as they are with motor vehicle operation and other situations.

What would be wrong with thinking about dicks anyway? You seem to intend it as an insult of a sort, but I'm not seeing that either. Perhaps they are women, or gay men, or just phallus fans in a more general way. Where's the problem?

perhaps they wouldn't be such an obvious target of ridicule?

Most everyone who doesn't need such artificial enhancement keeps it tucked away, like the rest of us. i.e., this says more about the lack of confidence in the person attempting to correct their deficiency than people suggesting that it isn't working.

I'd infer that too were my bias dependent upon doing so. I'd also pretend to know what they can and cannot stop thinking about to better maintain the pretense that my defensive attitude is simply an objective observation-- and though no one really buys it, we ourselves do-- and that's all that matters.

Most come out and tell me. It's like a reflex. Someone mentions a firearm, they start talking about dicks. It's like newton's 3rd law of penises or sonething. For every mention of a gunn, there is an equal and opposite response about dick.

If I thought about my genitals as much as some of these peole, I'd be 13 again.

To the gun enthusiasts out there:

Most (I hope) of you are sane and call for more regulations of drugs. You know no one is trying to take away your guns, but you also know unregulated guns are dangerous...all you have to do is see the latest news to drive that truth home.

However....
There are some, right here on DU, who believe in their "god-given right" to buy guns whenever they want. Guess what? Even if there were a god, he/she/it has not ever given you or anyone else the right to guns. The U.S. constitution does that, but that right was never intended to put guns in the hands of anyone, anywhere.

So, whether it's "hey, lookit my big swinging dick" or "here's my little buddy," the look in these photoshopped gun-toters eyes is adoration bordering on worship. That's why the joke persists.

Because sex is icky and bad, but violence is a-ok.

Texas (and probably much of the south) has similar laws, although some have been struck down by now.

As Molly Ivins would (probably) say, "You can't make this shit up."
