Man indicted, will face death penalty in slaying of 6-year-old Versailles boy

DECEMBER 9, 2015

Ronald Exantus, the Indianapolis man charged in the death of a 6-year-old Versailles boy, faces the death penalty after he was indicted Wednesday by a Woodford County grand jury, a prosecutor said.

“Because it was a murder committed during the course of a first-degree burglary, it’s a capital case,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Gordie Shaw. He said he filed notice Wednesday that he intends to pursue the death penalty.

Exantus is charged in connection with the death of 6-year-old Logan James Dean Tipton, who was killed while he slept in his family’s home. The assault charges were filed in connection with injuries to two of the boy’s siblings and a struggle with the boy’s father.

Exantus is being held on a $1 million bond in connection with the slaying. Exantus is a nurse. He worked at a northeastern Indiana dialysis program for Fresenius Medical Care until he was “released from employment,” according to the company.

If the death penalty is an effective deterrent, why are people STILL committing murder? Why does it seem some of the highest murder rates are in states with the death penalty?

Emotionally, I admit I want to see the worst of the worst suffer. I read and hear cases where innocent lives are taken in horrifying ways, and I want revenge.

But I know that it is the wrong thing to do. It makes us as low as them. You can release someone from life in prison if they are later exonerated. But you cannot un-execute someone.

It would insure he can't do it again....I'll bet there were signs of his potential murderous capacity....ignored by the system as usual. Our American love of violence and worship of One Upmanship just like in our business/financial system.

..... society doesn't become better by doing the thing that it purports to hold in contempt. The death penalty puts in league with the likes of Saudi Arabia and China. Such good company.
