Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHey!! do you think for once we can avoid the STAR WARS MOVIE SPOILERS???
I MEAN i totally hate it when I haven't seen the movie, AND there is some dude, or dudette who has to expose the entire plot of a movie, most of us have not seen yet. It makes me want to just not buy a ticket, because someone had to open their big mouth about the plot of a movie that has just come out.
SO STOP IT already. IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE, PLEASE DO US THE FAVOR AND DISCUSS IT WITH FRIENDS WHO HAVE SEEN IT, AND NOT RUIN THE MOVIE FOR THE REST OF US.
THANK YOU.

(41,835 posts)especially on movies that have been successful in the past. I don't want to read reviews or hear people discussing things about a movie I am looking forward to or wanting to see. We all know this economy sucks, so spending 20 bucks on a movie is a major investment these days... If I am going to spend 20 bucks on a movie, plus popcorn, I don't want to over hear how some guy saw it already and claims its sucks for this...this.. and this.. reason. I hate spoilers... especially with movies I am looking forward to seeing... totally.

Years ago I was at work in the break room talking to a few coworkers and mentioned I was going to see the sixth sense after work, a woman in the break room said ooh i just saw it it was awesome and it blew her away when she found out bruce willis was dead......
Whole movie was built around that surprise and she just blurts it out in the breakroom... I hate that woman to this day for that LOL

(41,835 posts)Yes I know they are excited about seeing a movie, but its like you are reading a book, and someone says, i read that once, its too bad the hero dies in the end. You just want to throw the book in their face and say thanks for ruining it for me!!
SERIOUSLY WHY DO PEOPLE DO THAT?? What do they gain by ruining a movie or a book for someone? I can see someone accidentally doing that, not knowing that the person has seen the film or read the book, but there are some idiots who just want to go...
"oh!! You haven't seen it yet? Wait till you see Patrick DUFFY FALL out of the balloon and land on the villain killing him, I laughed my ass off.. "
I DON'T WANT TO KNOW!! ITS MY 20 BUCKS, SO SHUT UP!!

(111,319 posts)because the interesting part was how they got to whatever it was that people insisted on talking about.
I've read the plot elsewhere and elsewhen so I have a vague idea of what happens. Since the idea is vague and I haven't read the whole script, it will still be surprising when it does.
I won't see it in a theater, I'll probably stream it on Prime when it comes out. I can't go to theaters. I'd be arrested for murdering the one cretin who insists on describing the whole plot on his cell phone, probably to another cretin who wishes s/he wouldn't. I'll go back to theaters when they install cell phone jammers.

I don't mind spoilers myself. In fact, I actively seek them out. But I am disgusted by supposed adults who let their own desperate need for attention ruin an experience for people who don't want spoilers.

tblue37
(65,477 posts)actually prefer to know what happens at the plot level before reading or watching something. In fact, I have already sought out detailed info about all of the key plot points in the movie, but won't see it until the crowds have died down. (I HATE crowds!) (Oh, and I hate surprises, too.)
I also read the last part of a novel after reading the first few pages. As soon as I know enough about the characters and "set-up" to understand the ending, I jump to the ending before reading the rest, and then I usually go to the middle and read forward and backward at the same time. Not all books are worth reading every word of, and at 65 I don't want to waste too much time on those that are not.
I teach literature, so as another poster has said, the WAY the work gets to the plot point is what really matters in most cases. After all, I already know that
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
Hamlet's uncle killed his father and that Romeo and Juliet both commit suicide because he mistakes her drug-induced pseudo-death for the real thing and offs himself just before she wakes up.
My daughter often recommends a book but then says firmly, "Mom, DON'T read the ending first!"
I laugh and say, "Don't be silly. You know I *will*--and I would even if I promised not to."
The thing about knowing how it all turns out is that I am free to spot clues along the way so that I can appreciate the author's/film maker's skill during my first experience of the work and also focus on other aspects of the book or novel without being distracted by what are to me relatively superficial issues in a literary work.
Also, my light reading involves a lot of enjoyable science fiction and fantasy (and even a few mystery) novel series that are, nevertheless, the literary equivalent of delicious junk food. Often the only thing of real importance after a few novels is what happens to the characters I have gotten somewhat interested in. When the novelist's skill is sufficient to make all the details interesting (like, for example, the specific character development and world-building details in Ann Bishop's Written in Red series), I will read every word. But if I have become bored with the author's style or his/her development of character and plot but am still curious about how it all works out, then I read just enough so I can jump to the ending and understand it.
I am insatiably curious, like a kid, about how things turn out in such novels, but not interested in shallow characterization or cliched stylistic patterns.
So I will seek out spoilers, but I will never seek to spoil the plot for anyone else.

(41,835 posts)I used to have an English teacher in High School who would randomly pass out novels for us to read and ask us to write a report on it. That's how I got to read the book Hiroshima by John Hersey. (Though maybe it wasn't random, him knowing I was Japanese) but it would have been terrible if he stood up there and told us.. Hey wait to you read this part...it will blow your mind.. and read that part..it will make you cry,.. etc.
why bother to read the book if they tell you how it ends?

Thanks for spoiling the movie!
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Dec 21, 2015, 09:43 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.

Explanation: Star Wars sucks so who cares!
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Huh?
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: FFS No one is forcing you to click on threads!
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Alerter....if we vote to hide this, twice as many people will probably click on the 'show post' link. Therefore, sorry but I vote to leave. I think most of us already had it spoiled for us days ago anyway.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I hope no other juror was planning on seeing this movie. Stop ruining movies for others.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: VADER mike? Like Darth Vader? Pffft. I really hate it when people are deliberately troll-y, and I think this poster knows what he is doing and is doing it to take joy away from people who haven't seen the film.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

When people click on it they'll see. "Mary dies halfway through the movie, Jeff falls in love with Jane but later finds out they are actually long-lost brother and sister, Jim marries Bob (which was pretty strange, being that they hated each other) and Martha dates the Organ Grinder on 76th street who turns out to be a FBI agent that was going to put Martha in prison anyway...for tax evasion."

(154,021 posts)in California a full IMAX 3D (yes we intend to, special effects, AHH) can run you close to 30 or more. At the matinee, you are talking 20.
In my town there is only ONE theater that runs $8 for the matinee and we are expecting them to go to $10 coming next year since they finished doing the renovation.
Mind you, I went to watch The Martian with family in Cleveland, 3D IMAX afternoon show, and that was the price of a regular ticket in San Diego.

The glasses are also totally different; not that crappy one red/one-green lens set-up and can double as cheap polarizing sun-glasses in a pinch.
People with more severe neurologic issues still have problems, but even my sister-in-law who suffers from debilitating migraines on a regular basis due to an accident can watch the modern 3-D with no problems.

I would like to see that movie before people start talking about it on DU!
Right now on IMDB it's their 22nd highest rated movie.
It also has a 95% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com

There were several times I thought to myself "and now they're going to _______", a bit before it happened. Including several things that were supposed to be big surprises. It isn't exactly unique in an action/sci-fi movie, but happened more than I'd like.

I told my partner no more blockbuster movies with them. I mean, what the f--k did they expect? It's friggin Star Wars. I thought it was great.
The wife is just as bad when it comes to restaurants. They are "foodies" and always want to try the latest and greatest place in the magazine or some dbag chef from some dbag show.
We went to see really expensive "authentic" Mexican place they picked. Before I was done eating I Had to hear how awful it was. Can I finish my food? $140 bucks for me and my partner and I have to hear how awful it was.
And if I complained about the tiny portions, I would have heard about how Americans eat too much bla bla bla. We went out afterwards and they all stopped for tacos after the bar on the way home.

(63,219 posts)I loved it from start to finish. Terrific cast, excellent pacing, effective (if slightly familiar) plot, good nostalgia elements and also enough that's brand new to make it fresh and surprising.
The new stars are better actors than the stars of the original trilogy, and if there's any weak spot in the acting, it's the returning characters, who seem a trifle stiff by comparison.
In the run-up to the film I had set my expectations very high, and the film did not disappoint. As I heard one reviewer observe, it's not perfect, but no film is perfect.
Definitely worth the price of admission.
yuiyoshida
(41,835 posts)admission is about 20 bucks, and that's not including the popcorn (and I love movie popcorn!)
some of us get paid in a week or every two weeks, or once a month, and it would be great to go hit up a ATM grab a couple of twenties and go see a show, but its not always easy to do that in this economy. Not everyone wants to use that 20 dollars for a movie, right away, maybe they want to go grocery shopping .. and put some food on their table first.
I have to wait for the next paycheck before I can go to the ATM...AND IT be great if I can go without someone telling me every plot point in the movie and all the surprises that will happen. I mean seriously.. don't you hate that when someone says..

Not everyone has the instant 20 dollars in their pocket to go see this movie, and I really want to see it, but I don't need someone to go into extensive scene plot points and telling me THE SURPRISES THAT HAPPEN IN A MOVIE... WHY do they have to do that, just because they stood in line at the first showing of the movie at midnight, do they think they are privileged to expose the movie bit by bit to the rest of us, so we will go see it? I don't want to know what happens, I want to experience it for myself, and hey, I may say I liked it but I am not going to tell everyone what happened in the movie..if they haven't see it.

What's the limit of fair discussion? Can two people on a sidewalk talk about it as you pass? Can someone talk on the phone about it to a friend who's seen it? Can two kids at a playground discuss their favorite parts? Can adults on the internet exchange ideas about it? Must everyone who enjoyed the film fall silent about it in deference to the wishes of a stranger?
I'm sorry that it got spoiled for you, but you're going to have to come to terms with it if you still plan to see the film.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS
Thanks for spoiling the movie!
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Dec 21, 2015, 09:43 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: This is exactly what i was talking about, meh.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

(41,835 posts)without encountering spoiler information, on a message board like this, its harder cause there is AWAYS SOMEONE WHO just has to be selfish and and get recognition for being that first person who has TO TELL EVERYONE about a movie, because he or she is entitled because they earned the chance by standing out in the cold for three hours waiting for the first midnight showing of the movie while not everyone could. That is their reward for making it to the midnight show, the RIGHT TO RUIN IT FOR everyone!!!
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)where spoilers are concerned.
One should know that if they go ANYWHERE near the internet, there's a risk of being spoiled.
Actually, there's a risk anywhere one goes--PERIOD. There's chances one may be spoiled on the bus, or at the grocery store, or at the mall.
My suggestion is ear plugs for public. And to stay off the internet.

(41,835 posts)I was called to a DU jury duty cause SOME idiot dropped a huge bombshell ON DU cause he believed it was his right to spoil the movie for everyone, here is the kicker. The Jury voted? to leave it alone.. YES THATS RIGHT... WHO IS ON THAT jury? A bunch of people who probably went to the midnight show and saw it.. so if they seen it, its okay to ruin it for everyone else.
TELL ME WHAT the freak Selfish is.. OKAY?? GO ahead, and tell me how being selfish is good.

(26,582 posts)Here's Skinner's take
1. Not posting spoilers in subject lines is common courtesy.
2. If you want to avoid spoilers, you really shouldn't be hanging out on the Internet.
FWIW, here's what I said about the Olympics:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10133533
Keep in mind that the Olympics were broadcast almost entirely on tape delay, while this year's World Cup is being broadcast in real-time. When dealing with real-time broadcasts, I tend to think the onus for avoiding spoilers is primarily on the person who wants to avoid seeing spoilers. Expecting to read social media and be protected from spoilers seems unrealistic.
Same thing with NSFW tags. They are common courtesy. But if it's really important that you avoid seeing NSFW content, you should probably be careful what you click on.

(2,248 posts)Whatever spoilers there were i've forgotten. I heard they were a crapfest, but then many fanboys are saying the same about this latest one. I know the name Jar Jar Binks? But how could that thing be any worse than an army of singing Ewoks?
Not gonna bother with Star Wars until they deliver the original 77' release in whatever latest/greatest format.

(41,835 posts)Why is she angry? You have to find out. I won't tell you...The show is on season Hiatus and should be back after the new year. You can go to Putlocker and for free watch all 8 episodes in a row, Cause I won't tell you what or who made her this angry. I won't tell you what happens before or after the reason she is angry.
But you can see one PISSED OFF Supergirl..and that's all you will see..and hear from me, cause right now, the guy who spilled the Beans on Star Wars...if I was Supergirl, I would burn his face off too.
