First day on the job Omaha police officer saves lives, is hospitalized

I grew up in the Florence area. When I was in grade school this building was a home with my dentists office attached. The door to the office is where the firefighters are standing.

Police officers rescued five adults, including one in a wheelchair, from a house fire Sunday morning near 30th and Ernst Streets in north Omaha.

Two police officers — veteran Robbie Goering-Jensen and rookie Anthony Abboud — were responding to a call from a No Frills Supermarket about 9 a.m. when they spotted the house engulfed in flames. The officers immediately got two residents and their dog from the single-family home at 7211 N. 30th St.

Goering-Jensen, a nine-year veteran, then heard screams coming from inside the home and re-entered the ranch-style house to rescue three additional residents, a police spokesman said.

“The residents all were physically disabled in some capacity and required assistance getting out of the home,” said Officer Michael Pecha. Several other officers arrived on the scene and helped before firefighters arrived.

(After all those years of sarcastically congratulating bad cops, it feels good to congratulate some good ones for real.)
