CNN Trump: 'Schlonged' is not vulgar

Story highlights

Donald Trump defended using the word "schlonged" to describe Hillary Clinton's loss in 2008
He then attacked the mainstream media, or the MSM, for being unfair to him

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump took to Twitter Tuesday to defend using the word "schlonged" to describe Hillary Clinton's primary loss in 2008, saying the word is "not vulgar."

"Once again, #MSM is dishonest. 'Schlonged' is not vulgar. When I said Hillary got 'schlonged' that meant beaten badly," he said in one tweet.

He then attacked the mainstream media, MSM for short, for being unfair to him.

"For those on TV defending my use of the word 'schlonged,' bc #MSM is giving it false meaning-tell them it means beaten badly. Dishonest #MSM," he said.

Trump may have confused "schlonged" -- a vulgar Yiddish word for a penis -- for "shellacked," which does indeed mean to be beaten badly.

But Trump cited Tuesday what he said was a 1984 NPR report in which "schlonged" was used similarly to how he used it Monday.

"NPR's @NealConan said 'schlonged' to WaPo re: 1984 Mondale/Ferraro campaign: 'That ticket went on to get schlonged at the polls.' #Hypocrisy"

The controversy began Monday night when Trump used the word to slam Clinton over her 2008 primary loss to then-Sen. Barack Obama.

"Even a race to Obama, she was gonna beat Obama. I don't know who would be worse, I don't know, how could it be worse? But she was going to beat -- she was favored to win -- and she got schlonged, she lost, I mean she lost," Trump said.

The comment was widely criticized, and Clinton's campaign said Tuesday that Trump's "degrading language" hurts women.

It's vulgar slang, and sexist in the context. But then, tRump is a vulgar guy.

He is a Vulgarian from the planet Vul-Gar. They are commonly identified by their short fingers, orange skin and colorful crest.

On Vul-Gar, every interaction with another living entity is known as a DEAL. The goal of the DEAL is to WIN. The ultimate WIN is to SCHLONG your opponent.

He is soooo careful with his language.

He can take that shtick and shove it up his hoo-ha.

What? Shtick? that's not vulgar at all.

And hoo-ha? I just meant his chimney.

And I think he's going to go out screaming much worse things when he falls. I think this is him actually moderating his full vulgarity.

CONAN: Well, it’s a word I first heard growing up in New York City. I think both Donald Trump and I picked up any number of colorful words from the various groups of people who lived in and around New York City, including “schlonged,” which I always thought was from Yiddish. If you were schlonged, you were completely defeated. I accept that it has a vulgar context to it. I don’t remember using it — I did a lot of shows — but I’m sure my executive producer, Sue Goodwin, was rolling her eyes in exasperation in the control room because we used to have constant fights over usage of words that she considered vulgar and that I considered vivid. And I almost always lost, but obviously not that day.

THE FIX: When you say you accept that there’s a crudeness to the term, is it accurate to say it’s derived from a reference to the male anatomy?

CONAN: To my knowledge, yes, I think that’s accurate.

THE FIX: Do you look back and say, “I shouldn’t have said that,” or do you think it was just fine?

CONAN: I would like to think it was just fine, but I suspect my executive producer was right that I shouldn’t have. I think there’s a difference in the way (Trump and I) used it. I referred to the Mondale/Ferraro ticket, while he used it very specifically to refer to one person — a woman. I think there’s a distinction to be made there. I was a little upset that a dominant narrative is that since this word has been used by an NPR host, that made it okay for Donald Trump to use it and that nobody, especially Secretary Clinton, should take offense. I fear that my previous usage has unwittingly given Donald Trump a veneer of respectability.

THE FIX: How much should someone’s rhetorical history play into this? Is it fair to say Trump hasn’t earned the benefit of the doubt or should we evaluate every remark in a vacuum?

CONAN: No, I don’t think we should evaluate every remark in a vacuum. I think we have to put Mr. Trump’s remarks in the context of Mr. Trump’s remarks — his history of crude and misogynistic terminology. I don’t think this is out of that pattern. If you look at the pattern of my usage in thousands of episodes of “Talk of the Nation,” I think you’ll find this is anomalous.
