(40,416 posts)You are one of my favorite DUers. Unfortunately I know no Japanese, and what little Finnish I know won't likely help (since all my mother taught me was naughty) so you will have to settle for my happy and merry.
I will say it this way.
As always, my heartfelt best to you and yours.
I hope that it's sufficient.

(54,428 posts)My Nihongo is not very extensive, although THAT much, I understand. I've only been to Japan a few times, but my brother lived there for years and married a local girl, though they now live in northern Virginia.
I have never been. Here, I am a Native Hawaiian and have Japanese blood that goes back to Miyazaki Japan and never been to either Hawaii or Japan. Truly Americanized, and my Parents don't even speak Hawaiian or that much Japanese.

(54,428 posts)My younger daughter, born and raised in Germany, German native speaker, chose Hawaii for her high school year abroad (encouraged in Germany). She liked it so much, she asked if she could go back for 12 grade and graduate, and we said OK, but reminded her that German universities did not honor US high school diplomas for entry (Germany had a 13 year high school), and she would have to repeat a year if she did it. Always the independent type, she said than the hell with it, she'd go to college in the USA. I reminded her again that in the USA, admission to a university was not automatic, and very expensive to boot. Well, she did get in, and now makes enough (at age 30!) to pay me back for all I spent on her US education. I haven't asked for it, as I paid for it out of what I inherited from my parents.
But what I wanted to tell you was that in that first year of school in Hawaii, she had three language options: French, Spanish or Hawaiian. As she had started with French in her school here in Germany, she decided to continue with it at her school on the Big Island. Since France is our big neighbor to the west, it made sense. But during the summer break, we were all in a car in Massachusetts when a song in Hawaiian came on. She started translating it for us. I remarked that I thought she hadn't learned the Hawaiian language. She snorted, "well, yeah, but come ON, ANY one understands THAT much Hawaiian!" Right, just ANYbody can hear a song in Hawaiian on the radio and start translating it for her poor ignorant haole parents, right? She kept her Hawaiian driver's license for ten years, too. Kama'aina to the bitter end, although she has now been living back here in Germany for the last 5 years. Her time there left a lasting effect.

(41,835 posts)They wanted to be on the mainland. They couldn't wait to bail from the big island to live closer to my dad's wants and desires. Guess where they are for Xmas? Not with me, but in Las Vegas for a gambling extravaganza.. they will be there until Jan. 4th while their daughter is at home in her own little place.. making friends on line. I could have gone, but who wants to spend Xmas and New Years at a Motel 6? I am glad they are having fun, but you know they don't Celebrate Xmas, however New Years is a big deal to them. My dad thinks he will come home rich in 2016.. maybe he will, its a very, very long shot.
My parents never taught me Hawaiian, they felt it was not necessary, cause I am a California girl. They barely taught me Japanese, most I did on my own at Cal Berkeley before I had to drop out due to lack of funds. I have friends on line who live in Japan who help me now.. my parents could care less..
Happy Holidays.

(54,428 posts)She willingly moved to the USA to be with my brother, said her job prospects in Japan at the bank where she worked as a teller/cashier had gone about as high as they could (talking 1980). In Washington, within 5 years, she was vice-director for Asia of the World Bank. When she had her 2 sons, although she got them Japanese names (which they don't use) and Japanese passports (which they also don't use), she never spoke to them in Japanese, and they know next to nothing. The younger one learned Arabic instead.
My wife and I didn't get it. Here they had a built-in chance to be fully bi-lingual, and she had no interest in it. I spoke only in English to my girls while they were growing up here in Germany. They both are now fully bi-lingual, and their jobs both make use of that.
Too bad you aren't closer to here. My daughters are both here, and they brought up a Hawaiian friend who had something to do in Spain, and was looking at spending Christmas alone down there. She found a cheapy flight up here to Germany (maybe 1 hour 40 minutes), and is spending it with us. You could have joined the gang. Eleven hours flight is a little long to fly for Glühwein and Sauerbraten, though.

(41,835 posts)in a virtual world, a mouse click away, and its what I will do if anyone is on, line. Around this holiday too many are doing stuff in the real world, to bother with a virtual one, but maybe there will be a few who will be hanging out cause they have no place to go, or in need of company, like me.

(78,249 posts)Christmas isnt a national holiday in Japanonly one percent of the Japanese population is estimated to be Christianyet a bucket of Christmas Chicken (the next best thing to turkeya meat you cant find anywhere in Japan) is the go-to meal on the big day. And its all thanks to the insanely successful Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii! (Kentucky for Christmas!) marketing campaign in 1974.
When a group of foreigners couldnt find turkey on Christmas day and opted for fried chicken instead, the company saw this as a prime commercial opportunity and launched its first Christmas meal that year: Chicken and wine for 834 2,920 yen($10)pretty pricey for the mid-seventies. Today the christmas chicken dinner (which now boasts cake and champagne) goes for about 3,336 yen ($40).
And the people come in droves. Many order their boxes of finger lickin holiday cheer months in advance to avoid the linessome as long as two hours.
