DU Class of 2001, Check In!

So, I was just wondering how many of us that joined in 2001 are still here and how you found your way to DU.

I heard about DU from two different sources; Skinner was on CSPAN right about the time one of the political message groups I was in started talking about DU so I got curious. I started lurking about July 2001 and actually joined about November.

So, who else will be celebrating 15 years on DU?

Come to think of it, it might have been on 911 itself. All the news sites were clogged and this was one of the few places I could get information. I remember making a post someplace asking if anyone knew what kind of plane had hit (Cessna? Airliner?) before the second plane struck. Good chance I asked it here.

It was back when we were assigned passwords, which I forgot after a few posts, so I had to sign up with a new name when we could set our own passwords. However, it was when the Top Ten list was in single numbers, so I found it pretty quickly.

Never was a website more needed than this one was. Stupid had been illegally installed in office by his older brother and a corrupt USSC. Most of us knew how bad he would be and it turned out he was even worse. This site kept us sane in the face of 24/7 happy face propaganda from the blow dried bobbleheads on our TV sets.

I knew about the site from inauguration day when Skinner and Elad carried their DU banner right in front of the tv cameras, then Buzzflash started carrying the Top 10 Conservative Idiots, and I started lurking at the home page because I couldn't figure out how to get to the forums. Finally got in around October or November 2001 around the time the anthrax scare began and it all detailed too neatly with the maladministration's hyping attacking Iraq. I don't think I actually signed in and started posting until they let Bin Laden escape from Tora Bora in December or January.

I had forgotten about most of it entirely until I started to answer the OP.

You guys made an impact on me fairly quickly after she joined thanks to the info she gained and new perspectives she was exposed to that got us both thinking.

sign or was it Bartcop??? Its a bit fuzzy.

Why do all of us who joined in 2001 just have that year but no moth etc in our profiles? Newer members have the exact date when the joined.

It seems that so many of us can't actually remember when we joined, it would help if that info was available. Perhaps in some server changeover its been lost to the ages???

It has been a long time though, went by fast!!!

Pretty much have been here since almost the beginning. I think BARTCOP was the person who made me aware of the site. (We miss you, Bart.)

DU has been a source of sanity and information ever since Bush was appointed by the SCOTUS.

BuzzFlash was a great news compendium ... Shit was flying fast during Dimson's reign ... Keeping ahead of information was why I came to DU in the first place ...

after struggling like a madwoman during the Clinton-era with a bunch of rightwingers at an innocuous message board (Mediadomain) that turned exceedingly bitter (and political) during Primary Season for the Election of 2000. Several of us from that site came here after Skinner opened for business to glean juicy articles and pertinent thoughts and then haul them back over to our soap opera board to watch the wingnuts heads explode.

I originally joined as "moe" (same as I was on Michael Gill's site) but family illnesses, deaths, took me back to the boonies of Ohio, away from any computer access and I eventually had to rejoin here under my current moniker after my return to wa.

DU was an amazing place back then, an amazing source of excellent information!

66. I found DU through an Internet search about three months after it started up
Sat Jan 2, 2016, 06:37 PM
Jan 2016

I had been very depressed since the Bush* inauguration because no one seemed to be talking about the theft of the election anymore. I read everyday and did not post because I had a job that I was terrified would find out about my association with this site. After a few months, I broke and had to start posting because I was also furious about another issue. That other issue was the fact that only one or two Dems stepped out and gave a word of support to Gore during the controversial fight. One was Dick Gephardt and I can't remember who the other was -- perhaps Kerry. Just two Dems, that was it. Cowards and traitors, that was how I looked at the great wall of the Democratic mutes.

So I opened up my posting here with "Where were they? Where were they?" just so highly critical of those in the party because no one backed Gore up. As you can imagine, coming here and criticizing the Democratic Party all to h*ll did not exactly make for a warm welcome from the crowd. Also during those months, I was extremely critical of the DLC. The DLC was not an issue here at that time, but I kept harping on it as well.

I finally decided I need to sign up towards the end of the year because I could not let go of the harm that had been done to this Country, and if it became known at my work I was a member here, so be it. Eventually, I found myself so deeply embedded here I could not imagine every leaving.

Over the last 15 years, I have learned to be a lot more refined in articulating my arguments, and I have also received three marriage proposals! This place is a lot of different things: intelligent, belligerent, caring -- whatever one needs from a political home can be found right here, as long as that one is a left-leaner, of course.

I think it was February? Sometime around then. I found it from a link on -- of all places -- a low carb forum. A member there was around here, and I decided to check it out. Universe knows, I needed someplace to come that understood how bad Dumbya was.

When 911 happened, I came here for the real news, and to commiserate with people who understood what that meant to this country. Gods, those were awful days.

I show up most Sundays for Salmonchantedevening's weekly Lounge post most weeks, and I cruise thru the major forums some days. Usually I stop by if something is in the news that makes me want local insights. DU is still good for that.

I found DU by following a link from another political site. At the time there were some amazing researchers here. I read for a while and joined on the spot. It was early in after the selection. Salon had gone pay to post and I was wandering the cyber wasteland looking for a place to land.

Good to see some of the old guard turn up.

In fact I ran to my computer. I remember doing a Tom Cruise, sliding in my socks across the floor. I was beside myself that day and sobbing. To me, democracy had died.

I felt so alone. I was hoping to see protesters in DC, but I saw very few. It wasn't until much later that I learned the media chose not to show, or at least explain the masses of people that did protest. Argh ....

DU's first day was crazy. It scared the hell out of me. Republicans were allowed to post back then. lol, it was the wild, wild west.

DU gave me a port in the storm. It drove me crazy that people in real life either didn't understand, or didn't care. DU has changed my life in so many ways. I love DU, even when I get mad at it.

Thank you to all of the DU community for the solace and education. Not to brag, but I'm a lot more smarter now! Also, I think DUers are the most creative, and has the best best bunch of comedians in the world!

But it really seems like there was something with Skinner and gang going on before that.

I was involved in several different groups and it is all a bit hazy a decade and a half down the line.

I remember laughing at the egging and laughing at how juvenile and petty he was to remove the license plate from the limo because it called for DC Statehood.

But I also remember how ominously gloomy it was that day.

I told my friends. Something really bad is going to happen because of this man. Something really bad.

They laughed at me.

Found DU through "Top Ten Conservative Idiots" - someone on a different political forum I was on at the time used to re-post it every week. DU has been my home page ever since I joined.

When I look back over all the things that have happened in my personal life since 2001, it's really kind of strange and weird that this website has been the one constant presence through it all. Rarely has a day gone by in all these years that I haven't opened up DU and at least scanned through a few posts.

I lost...well, everything, in 07. It took me two years to get a roof over my head, and a computer, and internet service again. By that time I could no longer remember my password, and I only thought my user name was 'Chelle' I wasn't sure. But I couldn't rejoin using that name because it was "being used." (probably by me, LOL)

Of course, even if I had all of those old posts to add to the ones I have now, I'd still probably be less than 2500.
