So, I was just wondering how many of us that joined in 2001 are still here and how you found your way to DU.
I heard about DU from two different sources; Skinner was on CSPAN right about the time one of the political message groups I was in started talking about DU so I got curious. I started lurking about July 2001 and actually joined about November.
So, who else will be celebrating 15 years on DU?

(26,371 posts)I found DU from a link on Salon's old table Talk forum. This place kept me sane in the aftermath of the Bush coup.
Anybody else remember all of us hanging out here together on 9/11? That was another DU-kept-me-sane time.

(37,160 posts)...following links he gave. Lurked for a while (2-3 months?), and then joined shortly after 911 so that I could reply to someone.
Come to think of it, it might have been on 911 itself. All the news sites were clogged and this was one of the few places I could get information. I remember making a post someplace asking if anyone knew what kind of plane had hit (Cessna? Airliner?) before the second plane struck. Good chance I asked it here.

(111,267 posts)which was linked on Buzzflash, when Buzzflash was a small site with only a few articles and editorials linked. It was back when we were assigned passwords, which I forgot after a few posts, so I had to sign up with a new name when we could set our own passwords. However, it was when the Top Ten list was in single numbers, so I found it pretty quickly.
Never was a website more needed than this one was. Stupid had been illegally installed in office by his older brother and a corrupt USSC. Most of us knew how bad he would be and it turned out he was even worse. This site kept us sane in the face of 24/7 happy face propaganda from the blow dried bobbleheads on our TV sets.

(182,824 posts)It was either that I stumbled onto to DU from a Buzzflash link to a Top 10 OR I was on the Freepers site looking for a discussion of news (hey it was the first thing I found) and they were trashing a Will Pitt article here on DU. So I went to check out DU and saw Ask Auntie Pinko - the question was "If I vote Republican will it make me feel more rich?" ~~~something like that.

(16,375 posts)I knew about the site from inauguration day when Skinner and Elad carried their DU banner right in front of the tv cameras, then Buzzflash started carrying the Top 10 Conservative Idiots, and I started lurking at the home page because I couldn't figure out how to get to the forums. Finally got in around October or November 2001 around the time the anthrax scare began and it all detailed too neatly with the maladministration's hyping attacking Iraq. I don't think I actually signed in and started posting until they let Bin Laden escape from Tora Bora in December or January.
I had forgotten about most of it entirely until I started to answer the OP.

Why do all of us who joined in 2001 just have that year but no moth etc in our profiles? Newer members have the exact date when the joined.
It seems that so many of us can't actually remember when we joined, it would help if that info was available. Perhaps in some server changeover its been lost to the ages???

(8,554 posts)after struggling like a madwoman during the Clinton-era with a bunch of rightwingers at an innocuous message board (Mediadomain) that turned exceedingly bitter (and political) during Primary Season for the Election of 2000. Several of us from that site came here after Skinner opened for business to glean juicy articles and pertinent thoughts and then haul them back over to our soap opera board to watch the wingnuts heads explode.
I originally joined as "moe" (same as I was on Michael Gill's site) but family illnesses, deaths, took me back to the boonies of Ohio, away from any computer access and I eventually had to rejoin here under my current moniker after my return to wa.

Samantha
(9,314 posts)I had been very depressed since the Bush* inauguration because no one seemed to be talking about the theft of the election anymore. I read everyday and did not post because I had a job that I was terrified would find out about my association with this site. After a few months, I broke and had to start posting because I was also furious about another issue. That other issue was the fact that only one or two Dems stepped out and gave a word of support to Gore during the controversial fight. One was Dick Gephardt and I can't remember who the other was -- perhaps Kerry. Just two Dems, that was it. Cowards and traitors, that was how I looked at the great wall of the Democratic mutes.
So I opened up my posting here with "Where were they? Where were they?" just so highly critical of those in the party because no one backed Gore up. As you can imagine, coming here and criticizing the Democratic Party all to h*ll did not exactly make for a warm welcome from the crowd. Also during those months, I was extremely critical of the DLC. The DLC was not an issue here at that time, but I kept harping on it as well.
I finally decided I need to sign up towards the end of the year because I could not let go of the harm that had been done to this Country, and if it became known at my work I was a member here, so be it. Eventually, I found myself so deeply embedded here I could not imagine every leaving.
Over the last 15 years, I have learned to be a lot more refined in articulating my arguments, and I have also received three marriage proposals! This place is a lot of different things: intelligent, belligerent, caring -- whatever one needs from a political home can be found right here, as long as that one is a left-leaner, of course.

(28,347 posts)In fact I ran to my computer. I remember doing a Tom Cruise, sliding in my socks across the floor. I was beside myself that day and sobbing. To me, democracy had died.
I felt so alone. I was hoping to see protesters in DC, but I saw very few. It wasn't until much later that I learned the media chose not to show, or at least explain the masses of people that did protest. Argh ....
DU's first day was crazy. It scared the hell out of me. Republicans were allowed to post back then. lol, it was the wild, wild west.
DU gave me a port in the storm. It drove me crazy that people in real life either didn't understand, or didn't care. DU has changed my life in so many ways. I love DU, even when I get mad at it.
