While most people were ringing in the new year, two La Vista police officers were helping to save a 5-week-old baby.

Officers were called to an apartment near 87th Street and Brentwood Drive in La Vista about 11:50 p.m. Thursday about a baby not breathing.

Upon arrival, Officers TJ Jacik and Steve Walter began performing rescue breathing and chest compressions until they were able to get a pulse and the child breathing again, said La Vista Police Chief Bob Lausten.

The Papillion Fire Department arrived, stabilizing the child and transporting her to Midlands Hospital. She was then transferred to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, Lausten said.

And the family, and hope all are well. I received CPR training years ago but can't imagine being in a situation where I had to use it to save a life.
