Or redeemable.
Nothing.
You might recall the Seinfeld episode where George and Jerry are discussing Jerry's nemesis/neighbor Newman with utter contempt, when George pauses and says, "Well, he's merry." Against all that he believes about Newman, Jerry is forced to concur: "He is merry, I'll give him that."
In the world of partisan politics, at times we are forced to admit that even the worst of your opponents might have some sort of admirable qualities when one puts everything else aside. Yes, Reagan traded arms for hostages, turned his back on the AIDS crisis, and was otherwise a clueless empty suit in the Oval Office....but he did have that vague Old Spice scented grandfather fogeyness about him where we'd all expect for him to pull out a quarter behind the nation's collective ears. George W. Bush plunged the nation headfirst into Iraq and the worst economic crisis since the 1930s, but there was the whole folksy faux cowboy thing about him that probably wouldn't have been so disconcerting had he not been the most powerful man on the face of the earth. And there was always a sense of classic tragedy behind Nixon's paranoia and feelings of inadequacy.
But that's all in the past. And now you get to this man, the current beast we have to deal with:
And for the life of me, I cannot think of one single quality or attribute about Donald J. Trump that comes off as likeable or admirable. I just can't.
He's ugly, both inside and out, but will insist that he's anything but that. He's not funny or original in his thinking. He's been a horrible husband, a horrible businessman, and really horrible about everything he's ever done in his horrible little life. His self-flaunted riches and fame are the result only of a situation he was born into and not in any way the result of anything he's actually had to work for. He's stupid, with his limited vocabulary that he only seems to use to bring other people down. He fails to put forth any ideas that could at least be praised for their ingenuity or specificity. He wants to kick old ladies out of their homes so he can build tacky casinos on their land. He breaks promises to pay for the medical care of his deceased brother's infant grandchild out of spite against said deceased brother. He gleefully cheers the loss of people's jobs at Macy's because Macy's previously had the gall to discontinue his cheap clothing line. He's a reality TV show star--need I say more?
And now he's using the bully pulpit to self-aggrandize himself in his own little Cluster B narcissistic bubble, and the fuel he's using is hatred and paranoia and whipping people up into witch hunt like frenzies against immigrants and refugees, Hispanics, Muslims, women, and anyone who doesn't genuflect before his own graven image.
So with all that in mind, I can't say but I'm rather non-plussed at the fact that this man has any sort of popular support, that anyone with even a limited amount of intelligence would consider him suitable for the Presidency. For some reason, I'd like to think there's something in the collective human mind that would make us automatically reject such an awful, horrible, terrible human being.
And yet, he survives. And he thrives.
The only other political figure in modern American history where I remain at a complete loss in trying to think of anything remotely positive or admirable about would be Dick Cheney.
But even he played a great Darth Vader. Trump, on the other hand, would be lucky enough to be Jabba the Hut.

(16,286 posts)is the epitome of proof that I am right when I say capitalism is a major failure.
When a system rewards the likes of him, Koch Bros, Walton Family, etal, you have a crap system.

(3,343 posts)Of the way he endlessly trashes his opponents in the GOP.
Comedy gold.

(43,889 posts)And our criticisms go way beyond calling someone a "dummy" or a "loser".

(3,343 posts)I've rarely seen it happen.
Trump literally mocks Jeb to his face every time he sees him.
Not sure which Democrats are doing that.
I see things online. But cmon to the man's face. In public. Over and over. It's pretty amazing.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,889 posts)Hell, I lived under Jeb for eight years and I've been able to find a whole host of reasons where I can show where he was corrupt or ineffective.
None of them involved him being a "loser."
EdwardBernays
(3,343 posts)and I meant on a national stage where it counts... nothing has damned Bush to obscurity more than Trump endlessly mocking his low energy, or telling everyone how ashamed his family is of him...
I think Trump is a despicable human being, BUT I do love his destruction of the GOP candidates... I can't help myself...
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,889 posts)I only care that he was a shitty governor with shitty policies and would extend those shitty policies and ideas to the Presidency. His "low energy" is the very least of the problems.
Trump's superficial insults are completely meaningless and lacking in thought when there's so much more to criticize the GOP field.
And I wish his insults were at least funny, but they don't even manage to be that. They sound like something a third grader comes up with.
EdwardBernays
(3,343 posts)Saying that, substantive arguments have little impacts on ideologues. However making someone look like a loser in public is a great way to make the herd distance themselves from them.

(124,647 posts)Trump, however, is even more loathsome than W, who was stupid, self-absorbed, lazy, and probably drunk most of the time. But I don't remember that W went out of his way to be cruel, insulting and overtly racist and sexist like Trump. I wish Keith Olbermann was still around to do his Worst Person In The World segments - Trump would probably win almost every time.
If W was a national embarrassment, I don't know what you can call Trump. He's way, way beyond embarrassing.

(33,688 posts)in every way possible that he seems to have stepped fully-formed out of a very bad screenplay. He's gross, venal, boorish in the extreme and wouldn't even be plausible as a lesser Bond villain. Unfortunately, the Vulgar Talking Yam is real.

From what I've heard of the Farrelly Brothers' movies - none of which I have seen, but from Roger Ebert's descriptions in his collections of vicious reviews "A Horrible Experience of Interminable Length" and "Your Movie Sucks" (both of whih I highly recommend for the comedy alone) - some character from one of their cinematic turds might be in the ballpark.

(4,858 posts)Cruz scares me a lot more than Trump does. Trump is everything you've called him, but his actual actions as President wouldn't be nearly as devastating as Mountie Boy's would be...

(23,546 posts)That's pretty much the common thing people tell me. He says what he thinks and he thinks little of anyone not him so he trashes pretty much everyone equally from time to time. For the neo-conservative that thinks Paul Ryan is too liberal to be speaker. He's a great man. The one thing we've figured out is some 40% of GOP likely voters hate everything, and I mean everything.

(63,221 posts)He is such a revolting specimen of humanity, it is almost unreal. Even W had a few decent qualities. Of course, I would have to dig them up, but Trump makes W look like a gentleman. This man is the epitome of the VERY UGLY AMERICAN.

(103,589 posts)Everyone else comes across as someone you could have a conversation about something with - their grandchildren, their pets, music, sports, something. Or meaningful political conversations with some (mainly Democrats). But I'd avoid a room with Trump in at a party - you know he'd be trying to make everything about him.

(942 posts)so there is that...
One thing Trump does do is to break down the political equivalent of the "4th wall" at his speeches and rallies.
It's "post-modern" campaigning, where a self-regarding candidate tells you how he is campaigning using self-aggrandizing tactics to achieve a self-serving result.

(53,410 posts)I've always found him to be a cynical boor, ham handed, narcissistic and not very bright. His working vocabulary is completely limited to adjectives like 'disastrous' repeated over and over again. Rarely does he even finish a sentence or even use one. Even George W. Bush could express himself better. From what I've read about him not even the rich or 'high society' in New York like or accept him. His idea of what is beautiful is garish. His biggest schtick is his ability and profound desire to humiliate anyone and everyone in the most crass way he can think of. His strength is that Trump wannabes love him. His followers would love to be able to say the things he does, though I suspect many of them do it in the privacy of their homes and in their circle of friends. I've met and even had in-laws who were like that. They hate with a profound fury because they feel cheated of their right to mistreat everyone and anyone they want to. In their eyes they are the victims of the unfair and unearned rights of minorities. In the name of Jesus they hate everything Jesus espoused.
Fortunately they are old for the most part and they'll die out, but not before they're left behind by the rest of us. Especially the younger generations (I'm a boomer, so I've had to live with these people all my life). But that won't last.
