Sovereign Citizens believe that "the only legitimate law enforcement officer...

...is the elected sheriff". (*)

Well, except when the elected sheriff suggests they should get out of the county. Then all of the sudden, since he does not agree with their interpretation (hah!) of the laws, he has no authority at all.

In other words these yahoos believe they are a law unto themselves.

And the federal government is doing damned little to disabuse them of that notion.

Sovereigns believe that the government has no right to tax them, issue licenses, or do many of the other things that the average American citizen has accepted as the roles of government. They also believe that the only legitimate law enforcement officer is the elected sheriff.

Unlike all but one other state (Rhode Island), Connecticut does not have county government. Connecticut county governments were mostly eliminated in 1960, with the exception of sheriffs elected in each county.[180] In 2000, the county sheriff was abolished and replaced with the state marshal system, which has districts that follow the old county territories. The judicial system is divided, at the trial court level, into judicial districts which largely follow the old county lines.[181] The eight counties are still widely used for purely geographical and statistical purposes, such as weather reports, and census reporting.

Connecticut shares with the rest of New England a governmental institution called the New England town. The state is divided into 169 towns, which serve as the fundamental political jurisdictions.
