And I'll go ahead and apologize if you are only in the 7th grade as I am thinking by the time you hit high school that you'll grow out of needing to put people down based on their appearance. But then again, some folks never grow out of it.

With that said, notice you used the word "makeup"....as in "fake", as in trying to make yourself look pretty for others....foolish. But I can see why so many have to do it as they will be judged by others and belittled.

I guess it's been pounded into the heads of females that they must look their best in order to find "the best" partner that they can and we as a society have a hard time growing out of it.

Women "burned their bras" years ago, maybe they'll burn their makeup in the future.

you know, lipstick and the like. The Pentecostal churches - of which there are many different denominations, one of which counts Kim Davis as a member - generally all adhere to a passage in the Book of Timothy that says women aren't to adorn themselves.

I know a lot of women who wear makeup (and quite a few who don't) and the ones who do, wear it because THEY like it.

"Women "burned their bras" years ago, maybe they'll burn their makeup in the future...."

Odd you keep it specific to only females-- as males engage in habits of vanity in the same amount, if not the same format as women do. Odd that everything you said can be applied to all sexes equally, yet you maintain a specificity to women alone.

However, as it applies to males, I suspect a creative rationalization will make itself know, justifying the unnecessary desire of shaving or (again, unnecessary) cutting one's hair every few months rather than allowing it to grow naturally for life.

But she makes a good salary, as we learned during her 15 minutes, and I'm not trying to be snotty (since I shop at thrift stores almost exclusively) when I say that she could have gotten something perfectly appropriate at Goodwill for $20. Wearing an everyday sweater (its hideousness aside) seems disrespectful for an occasion like this.

Wed Jan 13, 2016, 12:53 PM
Jan 2016

Look, I'm overweight and I can often look like a potato sack, but I can still look appropriate for a SOTU simply by wearing what I normally wear to work - in a pair of comfortable shoes, clean and pressed slacks, with a nice blouse and scarf (perhaps a casual suit jacket) - without wearing make-up and with my hair simply brushed and maybe dressed up in a braided chignon. Appropriate for a government affair is the same as looking appropriate for a professional job. Ten minutes worth of "work" to not look like I just ran to the event after finishing up a 3 hour shopping run at the mall and trying to find a place to park because I spent time at Kohls looking for a last minute birthday present for the office baby-shower tomorrow.

I make less than Kim Davis and live in California - where the cost of living is higher. And I can easily fall under the same stereotype that Kim Davis does - an older, lumpy, hard-working woman in glasses with poor teeth and work-damaged hands who buys clothes for their utility, doesn't wear make-up, lives in a double-wide trailer with four cats, a grandchild and a disabled spouse who isn't working.
The only difference between me and her on the surface is that I don't hide any personal fears or nastiness behind a religious façade.
As casual as I am, I still would respect myself and my hosts enough never go to an event like that looking the way she did. Hell, I wouldn't let myself be blackmailed into going to a boring office social get-together looking the way she did.

Sorry if it sounds shallow, but there it is. Clean and Neat is always the default for appropriate for a professional, be they man or woman.

Given her salary, we can dismiss outright any bullshit speculation about her poverty. If she can't dress like a grown-up, then she should watch the proceedings from a monitor in the kiddie room.

She needs to make money, and there are many who find her a perfect spokesgirl and a useful rallying point. The perfect mixture of angry, bitter and (fake) demurely "knowing her place." that if Scalia had shown up in Bermuda shorts and flipflops, we wouldn't be making fun of an inappropriately-dressed man instead? And what does Davis' now-abandoned political affiliation have to do with it?

People mock Kim Davis because she's a bigot and a hypocrite and a horrible person, and because she prepared for an internationally prestigious event like the last day at the outdoor rummage sale. There are many deserving people who weren't invited (or able) to attend, and you can bet that they'd have treated the event with appropriate seriousness.

Davis makes almost 2.5X the median income for her fine county, and you can bet that she hasn't paid a penny on fines or legal fees. She (or her handlers) made a conscious choice to put her in clothes inappropriate to the venue. We would equally mock a man who'd done the same, even if (gasp!) he were a Democrat.

It was another Republican "in your face" type of thing. She is another tool, and it has gone to her head. There is nothing important about her other than boosting up the hate by the right.

They treat her like a religious leader for the time being. I guess she can tell stories to her grandchildren about how important she was.

80. I get the religious restrictions, but you can dress better than that and be modest.

We have some religious people like that around here, and they don't look like a color-blind homeless person who has to wear all of their clothes to keep them from being stolen.

I'm fat, plain and frumpy -- and poor -- but believe me, if I were to be invited to attend the SotU address, I'd find something nice to wear. Nothing fancy. Nothing that would make me uncomfortable. But nice. Not because of what anyone would say, but out of respect.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure the thing about women not adorning themselves applies to hair color and eyebrow plucking. Just sayin'.

Which is odd because I thought Christian fundamentalists were against contraception.

"Hey, look at that ugly cow. She's disgusting. Who'd ever like her."

She is a horribly bigoted person. Let's stick to things that matter and not how she looks/dresses/does her hair.

When she struts around acting like a bigoted asshole, guess what, people are going to make fun of her.

Including how she dresses.

As far as I'm concerned, it's open season.

I'm just guessing, what with the red, white & blue colors...wouldn't look so bad if either the shell or sweater were a solid, but the two prints don't match.

Shameful.......

The first time this hypocrite made news I wondered how she could be so religious and have married four times (twice to the same man). What kind of man marries someone like her? Then I saw a pic of her current husband and thought, nevermind............

She could at least have found something more presentable to wear to the SOTU.

That wasn't my intention. I don't like to make fun of people either. But she's a self-righteous, self-aggrandizing, showboating hypocrite.

Her attendance was "intended to be a visible reminder that his policies have not encompassed all of American citizens and, particularly, Kim Davis with respect to religious freedom and marriage," Staver told The Associated Press. "So she's there as a visible reminder of that, his policies have actually hurt religious freedom and marriage and to encourage people to stand for these values."

Your job is your job and the church is the church and you don't get to mix the two because your hypocritical self thinks you're entitled to marry and divorce at whim but prevent gays from marrying.

So... screw Kim Davis and the sweater, scarf, knit coverup, afghan, burlap sack, 2 pot holders, sleeping bag and Bumper Bully she seemed to be wearing.
