A New Orleans woman was arrested Wednesday morning after her 3-year-old grandson was shot and killed when a gun under her pillow apparently went off while they slept, authorities said.
Deonca Kennedy, 42, was arrested early Wednesday morning on charges of negligent homicide, child desertion and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
In a statement obtained by NBC News, police said they were called to the scene around 2:12 a.m. local time after reports of a child shot. The initial investigation showed Kennedy was asleep in her bed with her grandson with a gun underneath her pillow, they said. Detectives believe the gun discharged and struck the child in the chest.

(78,249 posts)According to preliminary information from the New Orleans Police Department, the shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the 5600 block of Red Maple Drive in the Michoud area. The 45-year-old grandmother, who works as a security guard, told police she was sleeping in bed with her grandson when her semi-automatic gun, which was under the pillow, fired.
That's all the way at the eastern edge of town, across the Industrial Canal. I was expecting it to be in Central City, where many people likely feel so unsafe they have guns under her pillows.

(21,691 posts)Most pistols have at least 7.5 lb trigger pull (some have as much as 25 lb). It's highly unlikely she worked her hand into the trigger guard while asleep, got a finger on the trigger and just then had a sleep paroxysm severe enough to fire the gun exactly at her grandson's center mass.

(1,160 posts)My mom was a nurse and sometimes had to work nights, so often she had to leave before I got home from school. I always knew she was thinking of me because she'd leave a note and/or some (usually old-lady) candy under the pillows to let me know she loved me. Imagine if I found a gun instead...
