with the Republicon clowns hanging on they would not win elections and get needed deregulation bills passed. They decided to be Democrats and encouraged the Republicons to go off the edge. So we are left with a Democratic Party that is controlled by big money and the Third Way and disenfranchises the progressive left, and a Republicon Party to scare everyone into voting for the lesser of evils.

There were even some Democrats trying to draft Eisenhower in 1948 when they were afraid Truman couldn't win. Hubert Humphrey and Roosevelt's sons were part of the effort, but although Eisenhower briefly seemed receptive, he soon backed off. And even when the GOP drafted him in 1952, his political leanings weren't clearly defined.
