Donald Trump is a menace to American conservatism............
If Trump were to become the president, the Republican nominee, or even a failed candidate with strong conservative support, what would that say about conservatives? The movement that ground down the Soviet Union and took the shine, at least temporarily, off socialism would have fallen in behind a huckster. The movement concerned with such permanent things as constitutional government, marriage, and the right to life would have become a claque for a Twitter feed. Donald Trump is a menace to American conservatism. Trump nevertheless offers a valuable warning for the Republican party. If responsible men irresponsibly ignore an issue as important as immigration, it will be taken up by the reckless. If they cannot explain their Beltway maneuvers worse, if their maneuvering is indefensible they will be rejected by their own voters. If they cannot advance a compelling working-class agenda, the legitimate anxieties and discontents of blue-collar voters will be exploited by demagogues.
We sympathize with many of the complaints of Trump supporters about the GOP, but that doesnt make the mogul any less flawed a vessel for them. Some conservatives have made it their business to make excuses for Trump and duly get pats on the head from him. Count us out. Donald Trump is a menace to American conservatism who would take the work of generations and trample it underfoot in behalf of a populism as heedless and crude as the Donald himself.

Fixed that sentence for them.
They are really beginning to sweat what they have created. A small part of me hopes that Trump gets the nomination. They should have put a little more thought into throwing their full throated support behind the extreme far right/tea party wing of their party. Instead they were blinded by hate for President Obama and defeating him at all costs. You reap what you sow...

(13,503 posts)It's indefensible that they got into bed with the tea party faction, and all it's done is rile up rhetoric so much that it opened a spot for Trump to come in and rhetoric his way into the hearts of the bigots.
It's scary, and it's an idiocracy.

(9,688 posts)Next in line is Cruz.
After that, Rubio.
Wack jobs, all.
To my mind Trump is the most interesting. His campaign is to choose him, to cut out the middlemen that pay for the likes of Clinton and directly elect a Billionaire despot - and this will win over the USA.
It's perfect, in its way.

Shocked they are attacking one of their own.

(26,060 posts)He's NOT one of them. He doesn't care about them, he doesn't care about the republican party. He only cares about himself and ran as a pub because that was his only option. They can't control him and that makes him dangerous to them. He's quite literally destroying the party. If you go on any right wing boards, the battles between the trump supporters and the cruz supporters is delicious. Donald's problem is that he's not thinking ahead - if he were, he wouldn't have gotten sarah palin involved. Yes, she'll likely get him the win in Iowa (which I think he would have gotten anyway, win or a close second). Because of his thinking losing any state caucus/primary was anathema to him, he ran too far to the right. Now we get to hang Sarah and her trashy family around his neck in the general. As far as the republican establishment? Watching them wring their hands makes my day.

(13,503 posts)was the noose around McCain's neck. She'll be the same, in the long run, for Trump. And I don't believe, for a second, that he respects her. (Though, maybe he does. He seems to respect anyone who respects HIM!)

(26,060 posts)to tie up Iowa - for absolutely nothing else. He'll drive a bus over her and back up a few times if it suits his needs (which it will when he realizes she is a detriment to him). He only cares about himself. It's up to us to remind everyone he said he'd consider putting her in a position in his administration (again, only said to take care of Iowa - now he'll run all the states).

So yeah, he "respects" Palin. Because she praised him.
If the Ghost of Adolph Hitler should appear and sing Trump's praises, chances are he'll voice his respect for him, too.

(26,060 posts)he needs to win. He's proved that over and over again.
