I need to do some upgrades and have access to Home Depot (repub), Menards (right wing), Lowes and others. I would like to do the least harm. Any suggestions?
Update: Lowes is the winner. Thanks to all!
we can do it

I go there because it is really close to me. And they do take stuff back no recept no hassle.

(11,101 posts)The other two are publicly traded companies, so typical corporate positions, donations, etc. They're not great, but Menards is privately held by a tea party crackpot.

(26,345 posts)They sell knock off tools where they can and only stock name brands when they have to.
Their electrical stuff is junk.
Home Depot has some house brands like Pegasus. Stay away from Pegasus plumbing and fixtures. Junk.
I don't have much experience with Lowes as there hasn't, until recently, been one close by. But I have driven out of my way to shop their tool department.
As a contractor, I like Home Depot's return policy. They will take anything back and give a store credit. But beware buying ANYTHING that's been opened - because they take anything back.
Inspect all sinks, tubs, fixtures etc. because they take anything back. And they have a policy of throwing anything back on the shelf until some sucker purchases it and lives with it.
Menards is a huge pain to return stuff without a receipt. I did a big project in Michigan and only had access to menards. At the end of the project, I had a bunch of odds and ends (plumbing parts, elec. parts etc) and the clerk made me print, sort, and go through all the receipts. All I want is a store credit, lady!
I would go with Lowes based on the political thing. I wish I had better access.
Lowes employees don't seem as miserable and beat down as HD.
HD is way understaffed and no one knows anything. The best experience you will ever have at HD is know what you need, take off the shelf and check yourself out. Anything else is potential aggravation if you need help.

(1,569 posts)To ask a store to remove a product because you imagine a person you don't like could use it is just bizarre. Not to mention the fact that Adam Lanza didn't use a shotgun and refused to have a christmas tree in his house. I bet the girl you asked had a good laugh telling her coworkers about your request. I imagine Adam Lanza ate SpaghettiOs. Maybe I'll try to get stores to stop selling them!

(10,337 posts)Example: I bought a custome order set of French doors. When they delivered them and I unwrapped them they weren't at all what I wanted. I called them and asked what we could do expecting a big hassle. I sure didn't expect what I got as a response. What I got was "No problem. We'll send a truck to pick them up and issue you a refund." NO QUESTIONS ASKED! The fact that I was unhappy with the purchase was reason enough. They just got a customer for life. They have also recovered any loss they might have incurred as I've been remodeling my house for the last three years and have spent tens of thousands of dollars at their store. Their credit card is also a good deal. Usually, if you spend over $300.00 or more they will offer you the option of up to 18 months interest free financing.

(4,526 posts)Here in OK at Lowes they ask for your hair with an application. They charge higher insurance rates for overweight workers, but smokers and drinkers get a free pass.
However I have never seen an incident at OUR Ace. We prefer ACE because they are locally owned.
We also prefer ACE because I don't want to walk the length of a football field just to by a bag of nails.
