NASHVILLE A second Greenbrier teen has died and two more received medical treatment after officials said they drank a mixture of Mountain Dew and methanol racing fuel last week.
On Thursday, authorities were called to the Franklin Farms home of 16-year-old Logan Stephenson, who was found dead in his bed.
Within minutes, they were called to a second home, on Cemetery Road, because the boys best friend had begun having seizures, Greenbrier Police Chief K.D. Smith said.
Authorities have not released the identity of the second teen, but Smith confirmed Tuesday that the medical examiners office had notified his department of the second teens death that morning. The Robertson County Sheriff's Office also released a statement Tuesday confirming the second teen's death.

(16,423 posts)The Third Reich had a rocket-test-site at the coast of the Baltic Sea. The Russians pushed back the Nazis and eventually conquered this test-site. The russian soldiers found huge tanks of rocket-fuel: methanol. Only they didn't know it was methanol.
They drank it, and a whole battalion went blind.

(1,604 posts)Called "huffing". Starve the brain for oxygen and the high you get is asphyxiation. Then there was the "choking game" during my kids younger years.
I've known about this stuff since the 7th grade. It was a school education thing. Kids still did it back then though. Glad I was a mean parent to mine.

(65,168 posts)Methanol. Back in prohibition, badly distilled gin had reasonably high methanol levels and caused lots of drinkers to go blind as a result.
That stuff and the body do not play well together.

(33,688 posts)though not near as much as I witnessed. And though I saw some mind-roastingly stupid shit, including watching a guy grind up pain pills, sprinkle them over weed and smoke the whole shitaree through a bong ( ), then bounce around the cabin like a Nerf Person, this shatters every Scale of Stupidity that the mind of man has ever yet devised.
The only thing this dumb I ever heard about among people who knew people I knew was a guy who put a brick on the gas pedal of his car so he could concentrate on rolling a joint (with his feet?) and promptly crashed into a tree. And he didn't kill himself in the bargain.
Sad yes, but what in the blue hell could lead anyone to think this was a remotely good idea?

(6,409 posts)Teenagers tend to optimistically believe whatever sounds good. People used to think it was OK to drink Sterno fuel if you filtered it through a piece of bread. You still hear of people being poisoned by rubbing alcohol. And so on.
