(50,986 posts)blue tarp? Or was that somebody else? Or was the blue tarp guy interchangeable at different moments?
"Snack Hawk down." omg.

(14,691 posts)I assume it wasn't Finicum because he was the spokesperson. Finicum was the one casualty.

(50,986 posts)The thing was surreal enough as it was. The guy under the blue tarp just put it over the top for me.

He looked like a man in desperate need of dildos.

(50,986 posts)whatever mystique he was trying to project under that tarp.
I've never myself mounted an armed insurrection against a bird sanctuary, but to be frank, if I did decide to under take such a project, I'd be the first to forget a blue tarp.
Watching these jokers at the sanctuary is comedy gold. They are the gang that couldn't shoot straight combined with the three stooges.

(7,901 posts)as if that was the defining moment for the Bundy revolution. Several people have described his belligerent and confrontational performances as classic "suicide-by-police" behavior. It was said by press observers and refuge occupiers that he did not represent their perspective to the degree he often insisted on. Pete Santilli is like him in that respect.
If anyone else dies in this situation they can blame Finicum for going way beyond the line the others had originally drawn for themselves. In my view he was symptomatic of a certain kind of loose cannon character you find attaching themselves to the "patriot" white supremacy outfits. They seem to be quite angry at something and use these group settings to get that anger out and use it. I am not explaining the groups by this remark, only some of the damaged people who get involved with and are often used by them.
The remaining occupiers are mostly people who arrived in the last week or so. I don't think they have the "vision" that Ammon seemed to have. I suspect many are the kind looking for a cause to attach their feelings to. Not a good recipe for the immediate resolution of this situation.

(9,033 posts)those left at the refuge should disperse...someone must have informed him of additional charges that could be added on to his already loooong, long list of infractions (which is also how the Hammonds were brought into line regarding their now-correct sentences).

(62,444 posts)I'm a little dismayed by the celebration of the needless death of a person.
A deluded and misguided person, but a person nonetheless.
Granted he may have been "asking for it" and maybe there was no choice. But he does have loved ones who will miss him.

(11,175 posts)Yes, several of the posts in this thread are very funny, but we are, as you say, talking about the needless death of a person.
I'm not assigning blame to the law enforcement officers. Could they have used nonlethal methods to restrain him without risk to their own safety? I don't know. I just wish that the whole thing could have been resolved with zero deaths.

(21,506 posts)When he crashed his truck.
This guy stated his intent to go down shooting before this incident. Then proceeded to try to make his big escape and reached for his gun when he got out of the truck after crashing into a snow bank. I don't blame anyone but him for his demise.

(62,444 posts)I don't blame anyone else for the death of someone who commits suicide either, but that doesn't make it funny.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)OTOH, I'm not ruling out assigning them at least some blame when all the facts come out. Finicum had stated his intent not to be taken alive. In light of that attitude held by him and other cowboy terrorists, law enforcement should have made at least some effort NOT to give him what he wanted (a martyr's death). I don't know enough about the technology of tranquilizing guns, tasers, etc. to judge whether they should have been prepared to use nonlethal methods to take down an unarmed man, presumably with other officers with live ammo ready as backup. I hope they at least thought about that, though. It's not as if what actually unfolded was totally unforeseeable, as you point out.
