Sunday Talk shows

Meet The Press
Gov's Patrick & Kasich debate 2012, economy

As Mitt Romney officially clinched the GOP nomination this week, the focus of the race remained on the economy with both sides attacking each other’s record. Team Obama transitioned from bashing Romney’s time at Bain, to going after his economic record as the governor of Massachusetts. Team Romney, armed with new dismal jobs numbers, seized on the administration’s failed attempt to prop up the now-bankrupt Solyndra. This Sunday, we’ll continue the debate on economy between two of the nation’s top governors and campaign supporters: Romney’s successor in the Bay State, Obama backer Gov. Deval Patrick and governor of the important battleground state Ohio and Romney backer, John Kasich

Our new polls show Obama and Romney deadlocked in key battleground states. What are the candidates’ strategies for winning in the fall? Our Political Roundtable will weigh in on the latest campaign positioning: Romney Senior Adviser Kevin Madden, Former McCain ’08 Senior Strategist Steve Schmidt, President of the Center for American Progress Neera Tanden, and Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed

Fmr. Sen. Bill Bradley on "We Can All Do Better"

As we enter a hot summer of campaigning and as potential political battles loom on Capitol Hill, is there reason to hope that America has what it takes in its political institutions and citizenry to make our lives better? Bill Bradley a man who has had many roles as a former U.S. senator, presidential candidate, Olympic and NBA athlete, radio host, and best-selling author, will join us to discuss his new book “We Can All Do Better.”

ABC This Week
Coming up this Sunday, Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter faces off with Romney campaign senior advisor Eric Fehrnstrom on the "This Week" powerhouse roundtable, with ABC News' George Will, Democratic strategist and ABC News contributor Donna Brazile, and Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, author of the new book "End This Depression Now!"

This week, the stock market tumbled as the latest jobs report showed the economy created just 69,000 jobs in May, well below expectations. With unemployment at 8.2 percent, has President Obama done enough to improve the economic picture during his first term? Or will high unemployment continue to hamper his campaign as Election Day draws closer? And can the Obama campaign withstand $1 billion in anticipated ad spending by GOP super PACs this election year, and renewed attacks on the administration's failed Solyndra investment?

And as Mitt Romney officially clinches enough delegates for the Republican presidential nomination, the Obama campaign opens a new line of attack on Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts. Did Romney's business background help improve the Bay State's economy or did he fall short of campaign promises? Coupled with attacks on Romney's Bain background, will the Obama campaign put a dent in Romney's economic experience?

The "This Week" powerhouse roundtable debates those topics and the rest of the week's politics, including a verdict in the John Edwards trial, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's war on soda, and whether renewed debates on gay marriage and abortion may impact the presidential election.

CBS Face The Nation
Today's jobs numbers aren't looking good for the president -employers created just 69,000 jobs in May. That's lower than expected, and it pushes the unemployment number up to 8.2 percent. This is the first increase in 11 months, but its not the May unemployment number that voters will take to the polls, it's how the economy will look in September and October that will count. I've thought from the beginning that this campaign season will finally come down to "how is the economy?"

Both campaigns were doing a little stunting this week--in "great secrecy" the Romney people took reporters to the failed Solyndra plant in San Jose, Calif. Reporters got on the bus not knowing exactly where they were going, the Romney folk saying the secrecy was necessary because Obama's people might try to disrupt the meeting. Meanwhile, the Obama team tried to keep secret that David Axelrod, Obama's chief campaign strategist was planning a news conference in front of the Massachusetts state house. The idea was to paint Romney has a not-so-successful governor. The Romney folks did get wind of it and organized a counter rally aimed at drowning out Axelrod.

I think both events will be soon forgotten but the job numbers won't--if they get better they'll help Obama, if they get worse, advantage Romney.

Sunday we've Axelrod in the studio, and we won't let him be drowned out After Axelrod we'll talk to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, and we'll guarantee him the same deal: a chance to talk without interruption but both of them know I'll be there with a question or two they may or may not want to answer

We'll continue the discussion with a round table that includes Former Governor Ed Rendell, D-Penn., Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, The Washington Post's Michael Gerson (the former Bush speech writer) and The Week's Bob Shrum (he was John Kerry's strategist in 2004)

And finally we'll bring in the authors of two new books on foreign policy, David Sanger author of, Confront and Conceal: Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power and Daniel Klaidman, author of, Kill or Capture: The War on Terror and the Soul of The Obama Presidency.

We'll talk with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett Is he losing his grip on his bid to replace Scott Walker in Wisconsin's gubernatorial recall race? The latest polling has Barrett down by 7 points. Election Day is Tuesday.

The stagnant economic outlook after a disappointing May jobs report, a free falling stock market and worries about the European economy. Also, the National implications of Tuesday’s recall election in Wisconsin and Virginia’s role as a battleground state with RGA Chairman, Governor Bob McDonnell of Virginia.

And has the center fallen out of American politics? We’ll ask Senators Richard Lugar (R-Indiana) and Mark Warner (D-Virginia) if Congress can ever find common ground. And as the violence continues in Syria we'll also get the latest on the situation – Sen. Lugar is the Ranking member of the Foreign Relations Committee and Sen. Warner is fresh off a trip to the region. What options remain for the U.S.?

Plus our roundtable on politics and the economy with the Washington Post's Dan Balz, the Wall Street Journal's Stephen Moore and Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics.
