I was laid off in May 2011 from a job I held for 17 years. I am a medical transcriptionist, have been for decades, and suddenly unemployed found myself faced with an entirely different industry. For a while now, hospitals have been sending their transcription offshore. Adding insult to injury, speech recognition programs are being instituted to the point that transcription is becoming obsolete and morphing into editing the speech recognition product.
At some point along the way, I became really discouraged. I PM'd silverweb who also is a medical transcriptionist and she put me in touch with the company she works for. I was offered a job but at a lower pay rate and a rigid schedule, the latter not my cup of tea. I'm what I like to call a free-range transcriptionist. LOL.
Through this referral, however, other opportunities opened up for me and all of a sudden I found myself in a position where I got to choose among several job offers. I was hired by a research and teaching hospital transcribing predominantly surgery reports which I like and am proficient at, no speech recognition work, no set hours, and pay based on productivity. In three months, I will have the option of becoming an employee with benefits or a raise in the per line pay.
So a big THANK YOU! to silverweb and a reminder that networking on this website (thanks DU!) produces some excellent results.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Just got in from helping out at a local campaign office and I must say, what a lovely surprise to come home to!
I'm so glad everything worked out and you got a position that works well for you, AtomicKitten. I didn't really do anything but put you in touch with my employer, but I'm glad I was at least able to do that.
Just one reason I love DU -- we can help each other out and make good things happen.

(46,585 posts)I'm not here that much because I have this thing called a job now! I'm programming and tweaking my expansion dictionary and starting to create my templates. Then I'll really be cooking with gas. I've got a buttload of credit card debt that sustained me over the past year that I need to start paying off.
Again thanks so much for opening a door and pointing me in the right direction. I will not forget the kindness you showed me that changed my life.
Regards, AK
