Just saw ads on Denver TV from Cabelos. They have all the gun manufacturers listed who make guns on this TV ad. They are saying and come in and buy any gun you want as part of the celebration. On President's day.
So disgusting.

(50,562 posts)It's probably the biggest seller of guns in the United States. Gosh, do you think MAYBE they'll have a sale on them once in a while?
Strange thing, though: There's a Cabela's not far from my house. Normally they hang massive banners to advertise their sales. The Second Amendment sale didn't get a banner last time I went past there, which was several days into the sale. Hmm...

(2,419 posts)of course they're going to do whatever they can to get customers through the doors to buy their products. They're known for their selection of hunting gear, including rifles and shotguns. They're the Super Wal-Mart of sporting goods. There's a lot to hate them for however. Read David Cay Johnston's book Free Lunch-How The Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves. It's an easy read-if you can keep reading after it gets you mad. He devotes an entire chapter (Chapter 9) to Cabela's and their predatory practices. That "mountain" with all of the stuffed animals- They're claiming that portion of the store as a "museum" and it is likely exempt from property taxes-permanently-as it is at other locations. Cabela's makes more in government subsidies each year than they bring in through sporting goods sales. They extort huge subsidies from the local government where the stores are located in the form of exemptions from sales taxes and property tax abatements, all the while putting local stores out of business. (does the model sound familiar?)
I used to go to Cabela's. I'm a hiker and a fisherman and it was a convenient place to see thousands of items, many of them at great prices-just like Wal-Mart. Just like Wal-Mart, I'll never set foot inside Cabela's again.

(2,419 posts)and the sporting goods sales are not sufficient to support the number of locations that have been built. They've reaped their profits from public funds. It's not an insubstantial market, so there's some viability to it. Perhaps the other great reaper of tax increment financing and property tax exemptions, Bass Pro Shops, can make a go of it by absorbing Cabela's. I'm sure they're in a similar bind.

Are you going to condemn Sears? KMart? WalMart? How about all the car dealerships that have President Day sales?
