Republicans have grown so accustomed to a far-right Supreme Court that they think it is a birthright. Either you give us our "conservative" Justice or we will shut down your government and wipe our butts with your Constitution.
Never mind that some people voted for the Democrat in the last presidential election simply because they wanted a Democratic President in office just in case there was a Court vacancy. That is why they voted the way they did. Democrats, in every election, are encouraged to put their differences aside and vote for the Democratic nominee because of "the Supreme Court".
Now, Republicans are saying, "to hell with your vote". We want another Scalia on the Court. It is our right as "conservatives".
No, they have no right to have a "conservative" court. They have no right to block the President from nominating whomever he wishes. He is required by the Constitution to do so. The only thing Republicans are required to do is vote "Yea" or "Nay".

Citizens United in particular. Where Roberts went looking for a case to fast track to the SCOTUS.
