http://news.yahoo.com/man-rents-neighbours-airbnb-apartment-under-fake-121706100.htmlA man involved in a feud with his neighbours has allegedly rented their Airbnb property under a fake name and refuses to leave.
Couple Michelle Huang and Thomas Payne say their neighbour Sandeep Andre Hingorani moved into their rental apartment in San Francisco under the name Jim Tako.
He stayed there for ten months with his friend and his mother until the couple turned off his electricity, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The couple have filed a court complaint against him for fraud, trespass and trying to cause them severe emotional distress.

(12,754 posts)Two very sketchy brothers rented an Airbnb. Then, they complained about several things and refused to pay. By the time the poor owner got wise, they had been there for over 30 days, and the law considered them tenants, which complicated eviction. Then, they sued the owner. They trashed the place. It ended up costing her a bunch of money.
These same guys started a Kickstarter project, collected about $65,000 and then absconded with the cash.

(12,754 posts)It's not necessarily "their house." I mean that it's not where they live. Some Airbnb hosts are renting out a spare bedroom in their house in order to help make ends meet.
However, a lot of Airbnb hosts are speculators who buy up houses and then just rent out the whole house. I saw one couple in Portland, OR bragging that they had eight houses for rent. One other situation was a rental company that had numerous downtown properties for rent.
A friend has a nice house in a nice neighborhood, a few houses away, some Airbnb speculator has a "party house," which he rents out to a different gang of party animals every weekend. They've decorated the outside with neon, and the parties are just non-stop noise every single weekend. The police try to be responsive, but when budget cuts have left the city with two cops on duty at night, the cops tend to respond to robberies, assaults, etc. before coming to tell the party people to turn the music down. It's becoming a real problem.

This is a side effect of stupid libertarian policies.

(2,931 posts)I disagree with the diagnosis. A true libertarian society would allow the owner to come in and pull a gun on the illegal squatters, forcing them to leave on their feet or in a body bag. That does bring up other problems though. Really, at the end of the day, no matter what philosophy you subscribe to asshole people are going to try to abuse the rules... which sucks for normal people

(1,016 posts)He calls them the two Ts.
You need to do a very through background check, police background check, facebook check, credit check, All these cost money but he charges an application fee nonrefundable to cover those costs. They don't want to pay, then no rental.
He then requires past rental landlords for letters of recommendation. He calls them and verifies that they are real landlords, not some friend. He has even gone to the place that the renters are staying at, to spy and ask neighbors about them. Especially on weekends.
The best tenants he has are LBGT. they always dress up the place. They have more free money because both work and have no kids to spend on. Kids are notorious for damaging the walls with crayons and markers. That's why San Francisco became a homosexual city. Landlords would not rent to families with kids, but "roommates" were OK and preferable.
It is tedious but worth it in the long run.
